I was wondering earlier today why it took me this long to take up photography as a hobby. It really is so much fun.

true - and some people even tend to think that the fun part starts when you discover additional ways to use a camera. The best way to discover that for yourself is actually the most simple being part of a big community - just have a look at what others do on deviant and ask yourself simple questions : how come she/he/it or whatever chose that angle, chose that message or used that item...most of the time you ask yourself - could I do that in a different way - no development without looking at the work of many others and trying to figure out what's meant. Step by step the way you look at things changes - basically it works like music - you like a piece and think - how could I make this sound different using your own emotions. Photography works the same way. Anyway not lecturing here just stating.
