Description Lily Stone, a misunderstood teenage girl, goes to the Island of Sodor, to visit her grandfather, Burnett Stone, who hides himself away from the nearby village, and often goes to a mysterious old workshop.

When arriving at Barrow-in-Furness, Lily was surprised when she spotted Edward there. Lily happened to know him from a series of books that she used to read as a child, took his train to Elsbridge, there she met and befriended Thomas, who took her in his train to the station where her grandfather meets with her.

That evening Lily found an old photo in the study room of an unusual-looking engine. The following morning she shows the photo to Thomas, who couldn’t tell who the engine was, though his driver (along with his son Patch) points out that the engine could of likely come from one of the “older railways”.

Meanwhile Burnett went to the old workshop where the same engine has been kept for many, many years since Burnett was a child. The engine, “The Lady”, sickly told Burnett that she believes he’ll find a way to help her, as he slowly restores her with spare parts like his father and grandfather did years ago. On the Mainline, The Fat Controller (Sir Topham Hatt) was away on business and leaved his son, Charles Hatt, in charge of the railway, with the cold Mr. Boomer assisting, even bringing in Diesel, much to the engines’ (and Duck’s sorrow) dismay.

Most of the day Thomas wondered who the engine in the photo was, and met up with Edward and asked him about it. With Edward’s driver confirming that according to an old book the engine was a prototype for the Wellsworth and Suddery Railway, but it was unknown for what happened to her after the railway itself become part of the North Western.

After Thomas told her all of this, Lily went to her grandfather about the engine, though Burnett said he didn’t know about any engine (fearing for The Lady’s safety if anyone else knew about her). The following day, Lily, Patch and Thomas (between trains) searched any possible clue, with the two teens finding the old workshop with Lady inside it.

Lady tells Lily and Patch about what happened to her, after The Great War, Lady was assigned to one of the smaller lines (which would become Edward’s branch years later) and helped with passengers and goods, but an terrible crash severely damages her. Her driver (Lily’s great-grandfather) manages to save her and she placed in a workshop somewhere near Ffarquhar.

Meanwhile Mr. Boomer began to hear rumors of an engine being discovered somewhere near Ffarquhar, though Gordon overheard him and quickly informs Charles who goes to the village to find out about it.

Soon Burnett discovers that Lily and Patch found where Lady is, but she tells him that they’re running out of spare parts and would need to inform the railway of her location quickly. Thomas takes Charles to the station near the village where they both met up with Burnett, with him taking Charles to where Lady is, with some quick arrangements made of taking her to the workshops.

Lady informs Thomas and Edward that she was different places to them, which is why they never saw her, though the engines were glad that an engine from one of Sodor’s older railways will be able to run again.

In during the nighttime, Mr. Boomer orders Diesel to remove Lady from the works and take her to the old scrapyard. Duck noticed and quickly informed Thomas of Lady’s kidnapping.

Together with Burnett, Lily, Patch and Charles, the two engines raced to the scrapyard where they found Lady being threaten to be scrapped. Though Diesel was unsure about doing it, as he dislikes steam engines, but didn’t want to harm any psychically.

Mr. Boomer, out of anger, pulls a gun out at everyone saying that the steam engines were making the railway “un-modern”. But Charles informs him that steam engines are what make the North Western Railway the best railway in the world, and he’ll one day be proud to be its next controller. In utter rage, Dr. Boomer shots at an oil tanker causing a fire to begin all over the scrapyard. Without a sudden thought, Diesel manages to shunt Duck out of the scrapyard with Lily, Patch and Charles in his cab.

Burnett stays behind to help Thomas rescue Lady from the flames, as Mr. Boomer makes his own escape. Thomas couples to the flatbed Lady was on and escapes from the scrapyard as it gets destroyed.

Mr. Boomer then returns threatening to dump Thomas and Lady into the sea, when Harold suddenly arrived with Sir Topham Hatt aboard him, who happen hear about Lady’s discovery in a newspaper. Mr. Boomer tries to escape, but Charles manages to knock him over and the Sodor police arrive and took him in.

The following week, Diesel was sent back home, with him claiming to Duck that he isn’t sure that the railway will forgive for the drama he did before, though Duck just says “Thank you….” and Diesel leaves the island.

Lady was placed on static display until she was ready to be repaired and restored, with Burnett offering his assistance as his family moves to the island to be closer. Sir Topham accounted his retirement from his job as controller and says that Charles is the next “Fat Controller” to the engines’ surprise and happiness. As Thomas gets ready to take the Stone family to their new home, Lady (with a much better and calmer voice) simply tells him “Wilbert would been very proud of you”, with the two engines looking up at the evening sky knowingly.

Giving engines more focus and Lady more character and backstory.

As the actual movie don't focus on them that much.

You got a good point there. In fact, the majority of the engines pretty much disappeared after Lilly and Junior arrived on Sodor. James' biggest moment in the film was when Diesel 10 nearly killed him and Junior in the smelter's yard.

Yeah, with only him, Thomas and Percy appearing with Lady, Diesel 10 and Splatter and Dodge.

So parents are okay with a diesel with a dangerous claw that can harm anyone who gets in it's way yet are not okay with a guy dressed in black leather?

Lady is now given more character, and it's focused more on the engines (namely Thomas, Edward and Duck). Noticed the RWS reference?

At the beginning it says Lily happened to know Edward from a book series she used to read as a child.
