Description

This was SUCH a fun collab to do with eto-nyan ! She was absolutely FABULOUS in doing the sketch, lines, and color! I just went through and added in shadows and detail to the BG! Also, intro piece for Pyxis in addition to being a scavenging piece!

Pyxis

This seemed like as good a place as any to start over. Kinda rough around the edges but it seemed more her style, honestly. It was far away from humans and their pets, and those farmsteaders that had chased her off. And she'd heard whispers of another faction, but this... this place would do. Maybe she could finally morn her losses here, have time to pick herself up off the ground and out of her own pathetic self-pity and move on with her life.

Quietly, her stomach gave a soft rumble. Ah, yes. That dull ache in her mid-section needed to be taken care of. Her brain barely registered the need as... well, a need but her stomach at least was aware that she required some form of sustenance. With a mild sigh, the tall borzoi female wandered further into the territory of her new home, her nose sniffing delicately at piles of refuse in search of any morsel of food...

Chance

The pitbull mix was doing his daily ritual; dozing off in the shade to avoid the heat, but also not exerting any extra energy he didn't really have. But since he started making more friends, he was slowly coming back, filling his stomach with things that were actually edible and not feeling as sick as he used to feel. The juvenile was having a pretty good dream when he woke himself at the smell of something, or someone, foreign. A pet? But that scent was rather stale... reformed pet? He got up to investigate and was surprised to come across a very mythical-looking dog.

She was so tall and lean--definitely a purebred. Humans made... interesting dogs. He didn't know what to think; she was beautiful but odd. But mostly, she just seemed sad. Chance approached her cautiously, head and tail down to show he wasn't a threat. "Don't you think you're a little far away from home?" he asked. It seemed she was sniffing around, possibly from hunger. But she was so skinny, he wasn't sure if it was due to a lack of food or breeding.

Pyxis

Pyxis heard the soft shuffling of paws as the stranger approached and she swung her head around, taking in the sight of the blue-ish pit mix with a mild tilt of her head. She hadn't feared for her safety from him- not because she doubted that he could hurt her but more for a lack of caring if she were attacked (wait, wait, when had she stopped caring about her own physical safety? She was a survivor! She had a duty to survive, to hold onto the memories of her fallen friends!) Lifting her head a little from where she was bent over, sniffing about in search of food, the regal looking female eyed this other dog, a juvenile from the looks of things.

"Quite far, I'm afraid. But then... it no longer feels like one. I'm hoping to make this my new home." She dipped her head in a small bow, and somehow managed to make the motion look elegant and poised, with a certain sense of self-respect while still showing this other dog deference. "My name is Pyxis."

Chance

Chance's head rose when it seemed like she wasn't afraid of him. Weird. Many dogs seemed to get nervous around him because he had pitbull blood in him. To be fair, he knew just how scary they could be. She seemed so frail though--if he wanted to, he could probably snap her thin leg in half. She spoke so formally, it was a little odd, given the fact they were surrounded by piles of trash. "If you're used to the cushy life, you won't find it here." he warned. What was even more strange was the fact she bowed to him. He'd be lying if he said it didn't fill his chest with pride.

"Chance. Well, Miss Pyx, I'm not really one to have the authority to say this, but welcome to the junkyard. I'm barely a member myself, but I can probably show you the basics of the place." he offered. "We're... kinda desperate for new members. I think the prince would welcome you... provided you follow the rules." he shuffled from one paw to the next, feeling a bit awkward for bringing up the newest decree. "But before that, you look like a scarecrow. We can try finding something to eat, then get down to business and you can decide if you want to stay or not." he stated, figuring it might help the news go down easier if she wasn't distracted by hunger. The pit mix started pushing through the garbage, careful to avoid anything sharp objects.

Pyxis

A rare and wry smile graced her lips for a fraction of a second when he warned her about the lack of a 'cushy life' and she shook her head gently. "I assure you, I do not expect a life of luxury here. Merely to find a bite to eat and a shelter from the weather." She wouldn't let on to just how much her heart ached from the loss of companionship. She was strong. She was capable. She'd lead a small group of dogs of her own, building up a home and a sanctuary of her own. Now... now she was the one seeking sanctuary. Oh, how the mighty had fallen.

A prince, huh? She thought she'd heard some mention of a Royal Family. She suspected that, based on the way this blue pitt spoke specifically of this prince that he was the ruler at the moment. A vague curiosity formed in her mind for a moment about the circumstances of such a rise to power, but the thought was fleeting for at the mention of food her mind could focus on only that. "Something to eat would be... appreciated." The skinny, underweight borzoi eyed the young dog as he began picking through the nearest pile of garbage. She was much more used to stealing food from humans than digging through garbage, and for just a fraction of a second she shrank from the idea. But... she was hungry, and would accept anything at this point, so she carefully padded closer, careful though of intruding upon his personal space.

"What's there to eat around here, anyway?" She inquired mildly.

Chance

"Even those are hard to come by here..." he warned. "But if you end up being a Dame, you should be able to do better than others," he said. With a nod, Chance continued his careful search for food. "Trash, garbage, rats, raccoons, and foxes. Sometimes birds if you're lucky." he stated, still rummaging and using his nose to push through some of the garbage before finding a tantalizing scent hidden in a bag. He nipped at it, tearing a hole in the black bag and finding a to-go box with stale leftovers. His tail wagged about as he presented his findings to the newcomer. "Bon appetit!" It wasn't much, but squished stale fries and a limp piece of lettuce was better than nothing. Chance decided to let her take those and go back to the trash to see if he could find anything else.

Pyxis

Pyxis expected this lilac pit mix to show her how to find food in this new territory and then send her off to go find something for herself. Therefore, it was quite a surprise when Chance pulled out a small take-out box, opening it to find a collection of soggy old fries and a piece of limp lettuce, and turned to offer it to the borzoi instead of eating it, himself. She hesitated, despite the way her stomach clenched at the sight of food and it was everything she could do to keep from lunging forward and devouring the small meal. He seemed genuinely kind, even making a silly little 'bon appetit!', but... there was no way some random dog was so kind as to let her eat first. "You aren't going it eat it?" she inquired carefully, needing to be sure this was, in fact, an offering and not some kind of trap.

Chance

"What, you don't want it?" he asked, almost sounding offended. Something like that, without mold or being soggy or downright gross was hard to come by, especially in the dump. In the city, at least you had a better chance of finding something more fresh in the garbage outside restaurants, but it could be harder to reach. "You look worse off than me, lady. I can even see your ribs. I'll be fine. I'm younger too, I got more energy for this kinda stuff." he stated, not typically fazed by his gestures as he continued on his hunt for scraps.

Pyxis

It was clear that she'd stepped on his toes and offended the kind pit mix, as he sounded honest enough. It was possible it was a ruse, but she valued this young dog's companionship more than she feared being manipulated by him at the moment. "Oh no, I certainly did not mean to imply it was below me!" She insisted, tone still mild, though. "Merely, where I come from, unless you are considered a dear friend, you take care of yourself before others! You have my deepest gratitude, truly."

She hoped that he might understand, and forgive her the accidental slight. In order to appease him further, she stepped a little closer to the offered meal and began eating. Pyxis did so slowly, more than aware that scarfing down this food would likely cause her stomach to become upset, and she did not wish to waste the tasty food, stale though it was.

Chance

When she explained the reasoning behind her question, Chance felt his face grow hot with embarrassment. He generally held that same belief... but he was treating Pyxis the same as he treated the younger pups, back where he was from. She didn't seem to know what she was doing, or so he thought, so... well, what was he supposed to do? Let her pass out from hunger then just sit there until she comes to or abandon her to do his own thing? He might've had his best interest in mind most of the time, but when others seem to sincerely need his help, especially when they don't seem to know any better... With a frustrated huff, he turned his back on the Borzoi so he could keep looking for his own meal. "Don't mention it. Really." He didn't need rumors going around that he was a big old softie to newcomers. It might look bad on him when he becomes a don. Her comment made him toughen up a bit and add, "Also, from now on, you're responsible for feeding yourself. Unless you become a dame, dogs usually live up to that 'fend for yourself' lifestyle you mentioned."

Pyxis

Not wanting to get on this kind dog's bad side, Pyxis made a mental note to take his request seriously. She hadn't expected kindness from any dog here, and somehow had received it anyway. She wouldn't take that for granted, but at the same time she suspected that he was, truly, much softer at heart than he seemed to be putting forward. Why else would the lilac pitt go out of his way to provide her food, when it seemed scarce enough as it was?

"Certainly. Thank you, again. I just needed a quick pick-me-up after my long travels," she assured Chance, her tone becoming a little stronger as she felt energy return to her limbs, banishing the numbness from her lithe frame. Her head would clear, she was sure of it. She'd be back to her old self as soon as possible. Already, she feared, this dog Chance had a mind to believe she was weak, and unable to provide for herself. At the risk of pushing him away, she had to put forth strength in the future. No way would she allow herself to become just another downtrodden female.
