Description
I am back with another tutorial for IbisPaint.
To be honest I made this tutorial sometime last year, but it wasn’t really that well put.
Someone suggested I remake that tutorial. Looking back on it now, I realized I don’t really consider it shading. It’s more like adding some tone to the skin color.
So instead of this being a How to Shade Tutorial, it’s simply a How I Color Tutorial.
Let’s get started shall we?!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step One
Put in your base color!
Note: I always use a shade that is slightly lighter than the actual skin tone.
I do this for dark skin tones as well.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step Two
Let’s just say the base color is what OC looks like without the full face of makeup. So Steps 2-7 is what I like to call “Contouring”
Add a new layer, and clip it to the base layer. Note that steps 2-7 will all be done on this layer.
Find a shade that is slightly darker than the base color.
Using the Airbrush (Trapezoid 60%) brush, adjust its opacity to 88% and color over the areas where you think would be shaded.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step Three
Now using a darker shade than the previous shade, color closer to the lines of the lineart.
This is to add more “depth” in the shading
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step Four
Now taking the color that is slightly similar to the base shade, you’re going to use it to blend the other colors to the base color.
First adjust the brush size to 36 and lower the opacity to 51%
Try not to overdo it, you don’t want to blend too much or it’ll be too messy. I already messed up in this tutorial here by over blending.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step Five
Going back to the base color, you’re going to softly color over the areas where there would be highlights on the skin.
What I mean is color in the areas where you didn’t shade in with the darker colors.
This is the main part you do not want to mess up. If the colors appear to be off, you might have to restart.
Since I messed up from Step 4, the lighting for this step didn’t appear that well.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step Six
Using the same shade from Step 3, softly color over the same areas you did from Step 3.
Actually you can make the coloring a bit darker.
Look over the entire thing, you can always go back and color over the layer again using steps 2-5
Once you’re satisfied with the results, open the Filter Tool and select Gaussian Blur.
Set it to somewhere between 6-11. Merge the layer to the base when done.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step Seven
Add a new layer, and clip it to the base layer. Then set it to Soft Light.
Switch to the brush Dip Pen (Soft) or even Dip Pen (Hard). Either one works, but I prefer Dip Pen (Soft) when shading.
Color in the areas where you think would be shaded.
Depending on the colors, Hard Light, Hue or Overlay works too!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step Eight
Open the Filter Tool and select Gaussian Blur. Set it between 15-30.
Adjust the layer opacity accordingly.
I set it to 61% This is mainly to see how it would look once you set the other effect.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Step Nine
Duplicate the layer and set it to Hue.
Depending on the colors, Overlay, Hard Light and Soft Light work well too!
Move the layer above the Soft Light one.
Adjust the layer opacity. Depending on how the colors blend well, you may have to adjust both layers.
You should end up with a soft tone for the skin.
I set the Hue layer to 46% and the Soft Light layer to 29%
Once you’re satisfied merge both the layers to the base layer.
Note: If you’re more satisfied with the results from Step 8 you can skip Step 9. I just like doing both.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
✨And Done!✨
And that’s it folks!
That is my step by step process on how I color skin using on IbisPaint.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s not really a shading tutorial, but you can definitely add on to it. Like if you have your own preference to shading, you can use that after doing these steps.
Feel free to use it. I know it’s a long process, but I’m a quick worker so I can get this process done in a under a minute. Then again, I have been doing this for quite a long time now.
The only time I don’t use this process is when I’m making quick doodles and mini comics.
I do have another coloring tutorial, for the hair. If you want to check that out, you can find the post here: [IbisPaint] Hair Coloring Tutorial
