Description My contribution for the Krampus challenge at ArtOrder, Jon Schindehettes blog. For infos look -> [link]

The Krampus is a dark "Sidekick" of St. Nikolaus in some parts of southern Germany. I liked the idea of these demon-like guys running through the streets hunting for the bad children...so never put bubblegum in your sisters hair or they'll come for you.

Impact

Krampus has recently become more known thanks to movies and TV. From Christmas episodes of Grimm and American Dad to the Horror Comedy movie of Krampus, he is starting to gain more and more fame. With fame comes internet recognition and fanart. Now there is art that is well done, art that is mediocre, and art that was done that makes it look like it was done in Microsoft Paint from the 1990's.

This drawing falls well into the first category. The colors and shading are astounding. I love all the minor details that are in the picture itself. The cracked walls of the buildings, the well defined muscles on the creatures, the ridges on the horns are all intricate. The contrast of the background with the rest of the picture really draws your eye and help tell the story. The way Krampus and his cohorts look just scream demonic and the Christmas tree helps to identify what this is supposed to be. The bells are a nice touch, breaking up the singular color in each creature and the dark colors really help the eyes and mouths pop.

Not everything in this picture is perfect though and like every viewer, there are things I would've liked to seen differently. The Krampus story, as I know it, does not involve any creatures that are like Krampus, however I believe that this was a good choice on the artist's part. Having three demons creates greater emphasis on what is going on and really helps to convey the story and takes up space well. I am also not fully versed in Krampus folklore, so I may be missing something. If so I apologize. The slingshot, though a nice subtle touch, was something that I didn't notice until later, it did not stand out as much as I would have liked. It made it appear as if the three were only going after a child who was innocent. The placement of the tusks in the leader seem awkward and tusks in the one with the beak seems unnecessary. These are minor though and, as stated before, they are more about personal preference, as is the case with all art.

Overall, I greatly enjoy both this picture and the artist's style. I hope that they continue to amaze us with the art that they create. This truly does get across the darker side of Christmas.

A similar tradition exists among the Hopi Indians. There bad children are actually visited by OGRES ! The governing council takes note of bad children and sends out men costumed as ogres and carrying saws and big baskets (to cut up children and carry them off !). They bully their way into houses, grab at the children and bang at the door frame with the saws ! The parents finally manage to bribe them to leave, which they do with violent threats at the screaming children. The parents play their role expertly, just like the "ogres". The children, however, are NOT pretending !

On another mesa, the ogres visit, but instruct boys to hunt mice and the girls to make hankerchiefs or food, and they'll be back to check on them.

Anyone who has been beyond bad during Christmas time like serial killers, modern day bullies, child molesters, abusive parents/guardians, you better watch out or Krampus will come, and he may haunt and torment you every Christmas for the rest of your life if you don't change your ways. Repent, or he will come.

Excellent work, maestro. Krampus looks really cool.

Wow. I think I like Krampus better than Santa-- don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say bad words or anything. It's just... Sometimes, for children who really tainted the Christmas Essence, no-nonsense punishments are really more effective than reprimands.

Coal for the naughty ones? Too kind. Coal is a tool for warmth, and they(as said in movieΒ Defending Santa) are better distributed for the POOR to keep them safe in the cold and prevent the children from hypothermia. Usually I believe the naughty ones receive nothing, but to be bad enough to summon forth Krampus - these Blackwings? That's got to be some real dark deeds done, or dark wishes made. And if that's the case, swords are better applied than words.

I like the idea of having Krampus with old Saint Nick. They are like the Angel Blackwings - keep the naughtiness in check by any means necessary.

To be honest, if I was a bad kid and ran into these three in a dark alleyway at night, they wouldn't have to kidnap me. I'd probably just drop dead on the spot from fright...

I think Krampus is too extreme with the kids, how are the naughty kids gonna learn if he kills them? Also adults do bad things that are worse than kids sometime like murder and rape, why doesn't Krampus go after the bad grown ups instead?

There are technically more bad grown ups in real life than bad children, children do bad things but learn from them as they mature but these bad kids who survive to be badder adults aren't being punished.

Wouldn't it make more sense for Krampus to drag say full grown adult who did a bad thing like kill someone to hell and just scare the bad kid as the kid did a lesser crime.

Just saying, if Krampus punished guys like Charles Manson then it would be a better example for the world rather than a kidΒ

Just in my opinion

Krampus doesn't kill, he punishes depending on the behavior. An unruly child would just get a good scare, and be sent on his way. But a completely rotten child will get beaten with a faggot of sticks.

Lightsthroughshadow In reply to keniakittykat [2014-07-10 12:33:24 +0000 UTC]

Heres a bigger question why doesn't Krampus punish bad adults? Like the things some rotten adults do is like 10 tens worse than what kids do?Β

I'd like to see a story where the Krampus goes after Magia Don who killed an entire family of people. Krampus needs to punish those guys not a bad kidΒ
