It's true that lapwings don't perch, at least not as in 'sitting on a branch' like a lot of other birds do. They are basically not able to: their hind toe, used by perching birds to grab the branch they sit on, is extremely small and rather high up on the heel: www.nejohnston.org/Birds/feet/… no use in grabbing branches

Personality. Yeah these lapwings are a bit proud and alert. They often lure the photographer along the riverbanks and make them suffer the tiredness and fatigue. They are noisy too
