Q: Wouldnt ryuujin be split up into Ryuu, which is dragon, and jin, which is people or nationality.

The kanji used for "jin" in this case actually means "god," so it would be "dragon god." He's also called "Watatsumi," but I'm not sure if that name has a definite meaning that anybody knows anymore.
