Well, i made this especially for you so you can see sort of the process: [link]
Each from in an individual layer until you get to the part where it suddenly goes dark. Some layers when I paint are set to multiply and some are set to overlay. Grunge/splatter brushes are very useful adding texture. At the point where everything goes really dark and colors pop, I merged all the layers and messed around with the Color Balance option. Then just shaded things and then sharpened the picture so all the grudginess pops at the end. :]
