Sunfire
Real Name: Shiro Yoshida

First Appearance: X-Men #64 (January 1970)

A high school student in Japan, Shiro Yoshida was not even aware of his mutant status when the apocalypse variant of the X-Gene within him compelled him to travel to the tomb of En Sabah Nur. Upon unsealing the tomb alongside three other mutants who were called to the first one, Shiro's true mutant ability to control plasma awoke, and the powers of apocalypse caused this to engulf his body and consume him. Now a being made wholly of super heated plasma gasses, Shiro and the other horsemen of apocalypse waged war on human civilization. Shiro himself was driven to use his new powers to torch farmlands far and wide, bringing famine to wherever he went.

Following the destruction of En Sabah Nur at the hands of the Dark Phoenix, the hold the first one had over his mind faded and Shiro was left to come to terms with his mutant existence and the horrors he had been forced to commit in a world now teeming with anti-mutant hysteria. On the run from military forces, Sentinels, and superheroes, Shiro was only brought to heel when the X-Men offered to help him. Constructing a suit to help contain his abilities, Shiro was offered to join their ranks under the codename Sunfire.

....which lasts all of like two days because Shiro has a really hard time trusting people and the whole having his world turned upside down by Apocalypse has made him kind of temperamental with a lot of issues he needs to work out.

Sunfire is a old classic X-Men character that I don't think too many casual fans know much about. He's just that one mutant with the dumb costume, fire powers, and a bad attitude that can sometimes be seen hanging around with the X-Men. His origin is both very dated and not terribly interesting, so I decided screw it, I'm just doing my own thing. I decided early on he was going to be one of the horsemen alongside Archangel and I thought that would be a neat thing to build him around. So here he's a guy who doesn't even know he's a mutant before Apocalypse transforms him, which is where his fiery temper more or less originates from. And he's not really a main member of the X-Men, because he simply does not work well on a team. Maybe just a reserve guy they can call every once in a while. I also dropped his connection to the Yashida crime family because I don't want like every Japanese character tangentially related to the X-Men to come out of one family.

Like I said, Sunfire's classic look is dumb. Just... straight up. But his Age of Apocalypse/Horseman of Famine design is really cool! But it's basically completely different from his standard design, and I didn't want to shy away from his original look completely. So I decided to challenge myself to come up with something that combined both designs into one. This is my take on that, and I ended up really liking what I came up with. He's got the red and white base that is based on his original design, albeit modified so he looks less like "Captain Imperial Japan," with the black parts of his Age of Apocalypse look layered on top. The mask in particular is basically a marrying of both looks, the white mask based on his Age of Apocalypse design with the plasma erupting from his face forming the silhouette of his old mask (something similar is used in his current design in the comics, where he's finally become a full time X-Man). It's kind of super sentai-esque, which I thought was cool.
