First Appearance: The Amazing Spider-Man #6 (November 1963)

Doctor Curt Connors should have been a leader in his field of biochemistry, but his personal demons always seemed to be holding him back. A professor in the employ of Empire State University, Connors' troubles began during a botched expedition to the Amazon to collect samples of electric eels thought to have greater than average electrical output. But an accident sent their car careening off of a road in the rainforest, costing Connors his arm as well as the legs of undergrad Melati Kusuma who had been accompanying him. Blaming himself for the accident, Connors turned to alcohol to help with the guilt and hopelessness. He was reinvigorated, however, when he met his latest student Eddie Brock Junior, who introduced him to the Venom Project.

A miraculous protoplasmic suit with self replication and healing properties created by the now deceased Edward Brock Senior and Richard Parker, its potential was seemingly limitless even in its incomplete form. Taking Eddie as his lab assistant, Connors began exploring ways to utilize the suit's possibilities, including a revolutionary superfluid that could harness the bio-electricity of the eels he had obtained in the Amazon as a power source, as well as combining it with lizard genetics for limb regrowth. But a series of misfortunes brought Connors' demons back. An accident with the electric eel containment tank resulted in transforming mechanic Max Dillon into the freak known as Electro, pushing Connors back to alcoholism to cope--despite promising his wife he would quit. Divorce followed, and his wife gained custody of their child. And soon thereafter, the Venom Project itself was seemingly stolen by Spider-Man, before being transferred to Eddie Brock and transforming him into a monster. With his life and work falling apart around him and his funding disappearing, Connors turned to the lizard regrowth formula as his last chance. Alcohol clouding his judgment, Connors administered it to himself before it had been deemed safe. While it successfully regrew his arm, the lizard genome quickly overtook his own and transformed him into a reptilian beast with a mind running on saurian instinct, the last hope of ever redeeming himself disappearing behind cold-blooded eyes.

Poor Connors. If you're familiar with my Spider-Man project, you should know this leads to him being hunted by Kraven (and saved by Spider-Man), which leads to him becoming the sometimes lizard villain/sometime human ally Connors typically is.

One more Spider-Man character for the moment before moving on to something else. This is another one who is a long time coming. The Lizard is an iconic Marvel villain and member of Spider-Man's rogues gallery that I think most fans are very familiar with, and my interpretation in my Spider-Man project was pretty straightforward, the main difference being that his lizard formula was specifically based on the venom symbiote to begin with. Here I decided to give him more backstory than I had before, giving an origin to how he lost his arm, with a story I came up with him losing it in an expedition to the amazon to get those electric eels of his (that are involved in Electro's origin here), and that it is the same time Melati Kusuma lost her legs (she's a minor character called Komodo in the comics, look her up). I specifically wanted his lost arm to be symbolic of a feeling of guilt, not something that happened my mere happenstance or something he lost heroically, but something he feels shame over, which drives his motivation for creating the lizard serum.

His design is pretty much mostly unchanged from my design from the Spider-Man project, just refined more. I also made his regrown arm look more black, which was always part of my design but felt under emphasized--it's supposed to connect to the venom symbiote origin for the serum here. But really, most of my work here went into trying to draw him from the front, which was trickier than I anticipated. But it turned out pretty good in the end.
