Description Drawn in late December, but I'm going to pinch some of the description from my Instagram post for you and put it right here :

I actually drew something....a tree! I never, ever, ever tend to draw things like trees on their own, I don't find scenery or backgrounds particularly interesting to draw, but I've been feeling really weird about drawing lately, in that I've just not wanted to draw at all. I hate feeling like that, but the other day I decided that I wouldn't mind drawing a tree, I wanted to try out drawing tree bark mainly, but in more of a fantasy style. In 2018, I'd like to focus more on backgrounds, but in the sense that I'd like to find a way to enjoy drawing them. This was really fun! By focusing on the texture, I found a way to make this interesting to work on. Admittedly, it's not the most accurate looking tree xD but as I said, I was going for more of a quirky look. I wanted to give this tree its own story (I heard in a YouTube video that a good way to learn to love backgrounds is to imagine that they're like a character) so while I was working on this, I had all sorts of ideas about the spirit of someone being trapped in the tree, or someone being buried under it, or the tree possessing some kind of power. It was so fun! In the end though, it's Christmas Eve...and I wanted to make it look a bit festive. There's a tree in one of my all time favourite books, the Night Circus, called the Wishing Tree. I believe the concept is that you write a wish on a candle, and light that wish from a previous candle, and add it to the tree. So I went with something like that and added lots of candles, and I must say, I think it really added a nice element to his picture! I might fine line and colour it later on 😊. This really helped me to regain some inspiration!

I decided to use my markers over the pencil sketch to give this a really conceptual kind of feel . Plus, I think it added more texture. The Circus in the book is all monochrome, so I decided to stick to that colour palette, only adding a touch of colour to the candles.
