One of the greatest delights of going to the Newport Aquarium was that I paid for their "Penguin Experience". Now I have "met" and petted a penguin in the past; however, given the chance to interact and/or photograph penguins, I'm going to take that opportunity. I must admit it was a delightful experience! I felt like I owed an apology to the fellow participants though. They were a man and wife and a mother and daughter...and me. When we entered the room, we are instructed to sit on the benches which lined the walls. The husband and wife team went to one side of the room while the mother/daughter team and myself took up the bench on the other side but I went to one end of the bench and they the other. Now, I'm seriously not kidding here.....every penguin came running to me!!! They all flocked at my feet!!! I looked at the others and said: "Seriously, I didn't do anything!" I felt like I owed them some explanation! We were not allowed to just bend over and touch them and you've NO idea how hard it was for me to follow those instructions!!! But I did...reluctantly! However, I did spend a lot of time photographing and talking to them! And a couple were brought by for us to touch/pet. Many more photos will follow I promise!!!! Yeah, the guy noted that I didn't voice my agreement to this before we entered also! hahahaha!Β I told him that I used to work for my vet and that we saw exotic animals; of course, I never saw a penguin but he didn't need to know that!Β However, I told him I would agree to his terms.Β hahahaha!Β I see the need for them as they don't wish for anyone to be hurt and these guys could do some damage because they will bite, of course.Β But it wouldn't bother me to have them nip me.Β However, I was a good little girl and I obeyed the rules....hard as it was!

I guess really they don't have much Β choice if there's more than one person going in. Even if you would be smart enough not to do something stupid, the next guy might not. I remember going in to see the foxes at Wolf Park. At the time they had a little arctic fox, Essie. They spent, no kidding, 45 minutes telling us what not to do. She was fine, but jumped right into my lap to check out my camera lens when she heard the mechanism go off as I snapped a shot. CUTE! But totally capable of mugging us, even at about 6 pounds!

It was hard, but they read up the riot act, so I had no choice. But I really loved that she jumped up in my lap! What a cutie pie!

Yes, sometimes I feel that certain ones tend to "read the riot act" a bit too far, but it is their call.

I can understand it, because if some stupid person did make a bad move and God forbid got scratched or nipped it would be the animal who would pay the price in the long run. So whatever it takes to keep the animals safe, I am for it. Even if it means I can't have my fun.

Yes, I have to agree with you.Β Heaven help us if our dear animals would have something happen to them because of some stupid person!!!!!Β Safety for THEM first.....always!!!!
