Description A second shot of my v19 Johnny! (I'm calling it the v19 version because it's based on the cover for volume 19, and includes some details that aren't in the ordinary costume as seen in the manga.) Photo by Geoffrey Greer.

Hey, you can see my hearts in this! I'm really pleased with how they turned out; they're actually both hollow and flexible, so if they bend, it's no big deal. If you'd like me to whip you some up for your own JoJo cosplay (these would be great for Dio belts and knees) in this or any other sizes, send me a note! I can definitely make more.

The secret of this costume is this . Times a million, or however many seams or stars there are. I did all of it as going over the stars, since in my tests it worked better that way, and also there's weird detail in the art like the reddish pink stars going over both types of stripes on the sides. The other secret is "wearing two binders", which wasn't all that fun! It felt so weird to wander around the San Antonio Riverwalk wearing spandex, since wearing a spandex jumpsuit feels like wearing nothing at all! nothing at all! nothing at all! Overall though I'm really happy with everything other than the (currently not visible) feather, and I feel really proud of all the small details, some of which you can't even see. Waaaaaah I talk too much!

I also am under orders from all of my family members and many of my friends that if I ever think it's a good idea to make a star-covered outfit (without using pre-printed star print spandex) again, I am to be variously shot, sent to the mental institution, or denied all chocolate privileges for a month. Now I love chocolate like Jonathan Joestar, so I don't know if I'll be doing any other Johnny Joestar outfits in the foreseeable future. I can't give up on cosplaying JoJo, though, since it's just too much fun, and this outfit is far from done; there's a few location shoots I'm planning (can we say Wild West Ghost Town?), and I'd like to try and shoot it with some SBR-loving friends at a later convention for more of a group interaction, since a Johnny by himself is a lonely Johnny indeed.

The best Johnny colors I swear. I hope he gets a toy in this color scheme, and you're awesome for cosplaying it! I remember my friend saw artwork from Steel Ball Run and told her it was like an "alternate timeline" (she's seen the new series and OVA) first reaction to colors like this and the Atlantic Ocean stage in the All Star battle trailers was "what the fuck are they on Mars?" I replied "No because Araki."

These details are just incredible! I love your JoJo costumes, because though I don't know the first thing about JoJo, it means you have a lot of skill. I've seen you work with some crazy fabrics and patterns, and everything always comes out perfect.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate this compliment ;_;

JoJo costumes are, for the most part, where sanity goes to die. It's where I learned how to vinyl and even more importantly, how to spandex. So much spandex. I have a spandex pile now.

Oh you are just wonderful!(as always ;3)
I've also made this costume so it's fun to see other versions
So you sewed every star on!? o_O Holy shit what a work. I wasn't that patient so I just glued them on :3

Really really great work with the costume and everything else!
I'm so jealous of you being able to shoot in the states XD I'd do anything to have a SBR cosplay-shooting there!

oh my goodness thank you SO MUCH (it means a lot from you because you're one of my favorite JoJo cosplayers *sob*)

I loved your version too; it was really fantastic!!!! I saw a few versions of this color scheme online, and it was really cool to see how everybody took the same illustration and did their own version a bit differently. JoJo is awesome that way!

And yes, I did sew on all the stars.... and the stripes and everything else.... it was absolute insanity and I don't think I'm ever trying anything else like that ever again. Before I finished, I ended up with my family threatening to send me to the mental hospital if I tried anything like this again, and my friends trying to keep me from throwing the sewing machine at a wall out of frustration. I guess I'm just masochistic enough to enjoy that sort of work sometimes... but it was a lot more fun when it was finished!!! ahahaha

If you ever go to America we should somehow do SBR shoots! It often takes some travel (I was lucky to take this to an event with good locations, but I'm also planning on taking this to a ghost town a five or six hour drive away), but the scenery can't be beat. Then again, if I want any scenery that ISN'T either Western-themed, woods, or beaches, it's hard for me to get... not much architecture you can photograph with in California!!! So every place has its ups and downs for photography, really.

don't ask me why I'm replying to a 4 month old post... I was kinda away from da

waaaa I'm one of your favourite Jojo cosplayers!? no kidding XD you dont know how much that means to me! thank you~~~ <3<3

hahaha I've been in similar situations too XD Recently I made the costume of Hirose Yasuho (Jojolion), and making 60 roses in chiffon wasn't a pleasant time I must say.

omg, shooting SBR cosplay in america is like the biggest cosplay-dream I have! sounds really amazing...!! sigh!
you know what we have here in Sweden? ...snow! So I'm planning on Sugar Mountain

btw I love your MLP-cosplay! wish to do one of them some day

i know i'm late replying too, I tend to put off replying to dA comments sometimes until they build up and then I'm all "WAAAAAA WHAT AM I DOING" so it's okay!

seriously I love the variety of stuff you do and the effort you put into all of your photos and it's really spiffy and great so PLEASE keep up all the great JoJo work! (Even if it means 60 chiffon roses, oh my goodness that sounds annoying!)

You know, I'm actually slightly envious of the snow? I'd like to do Sugar Mountain or Magenta Magenta but I live somewhere where half a cm of snow makes the news, so while I can get plenty of "western" photos, if I want "winter" I'm going to have to pile in a car and drive for about five hours up to some mountains and hope it's cold enough that year... I look forward to seeing Sugar in the snow pictures though!

and you should totally do some MLP sometime, it's nice to have fun and comfortable casual outfits! especially ones that don't require infinite makeup... hahahaha jojo

hi there!
Now I've uploaded more pictures from the shooting in the snow! you probably can imagine how freezing it was out there XD hahaha
but it was definitely worth it
Magenta would be a perfect character to photograph in this weather too

Well I'm also envious for your western location, especially as a SBR fan!
Really wish I could visit america some day... never been there you know!
Btw do you know that there are quite many JJBA events coming up in Japan this year? Almost every month until october actually o_O Hopefully I'm going to attend one or two of them...

MLP cosplaying might take a while for me to do since I've got so many jojo-cos planned, but someday I will, definitely XD

If you ever visit an event in America I'd love to meet you there! It's a big country but I'm at a lot of the events on the Western coast... we have a lot more JoJo fans now and it's really awesome!

I hope you do get to go to a JoJo event and take pics; there's more JoJo cosplayers now but I'd love to see a JoJo-only event..... @_@

aaaaaah thank you, that's possibly the best compliment I could get! I liked that scheme from the start but trying to find that many types of spandex in all those colors that actually went together... it nearly made me go insane (or at least that's what the fabric store ladies thought with me swanning around with a bunch of swatches and a manga cover without its manga inside...). It's an odd scheme but I'm glad it came together and thank you sooooo much!

violet-raincrow In reply to hanyaanfaery [2012-08-21 12:59:05 +0000 UTC]

Haha, thankfully I have no plans to do much stretch-sewing anytime soon. (My poison of choice is sparkly brocade that unravels if you so much as look at it. ) But I'm definitely going to share the tutorial with my cosplay buddies.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hanyaanfaery In reply to violet-raincrow [2012-08-22 03:54:05 +0000 UTC]

i'm glad! although oh man brocade... Have you tried using either an overlock stitch (if your machine has it) or a zig-zag stitch tracing around the edges on the pieces of fabric before you assemble them? The last time I had to use brocade, it really helped to do that!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

violet-raincrow In reply to hanyaanfaery [2012-08-24 04:26:09 +0000 UTC]

Last time I used brocade I knew next to nothing about sewing (yes, my first serious foray into costuming was a late 1600/early 1700s frock coat in peacocky brocade. I'm that insane), so no, I didn't even think to try that. I did, however, bind all the seams with bias tape, which, considering I never lined the stupid thing (aside from flat-lining it with muslin for support), looks atrocious and one of these days I must line it properly. (I didn't seam-bind the pocket flaps, though, and now they're starting to fray. ) I definitely know better for next time and will zigzag all the edges!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

U23Art In reply to hanyaanfaery [2012-08-21 04:55:00 +0000 UTC]

As far as I understand, Gyro is fairly easy to cosplay. And hopefully I'll finally be able to pull off the image.

My last cosplays were Reno from FF7 and Ginji Amano, I should have learned the first time that I can't look like a lanky asian person.

The difficult part will be getting my friend to read Steel Ball Run and then convincing him to practically dress like an American flag.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

hanyaanfaery In reply to U23Art [2012-08-22 03:55:26 +0000 UTC]

ahaha johnny's overly patriotic outfit; don't do the red-white-blue colorscheme even if you're in America because it gets you odd questions. (One woman once got mad at me for seeing the flag and the horseshoe and assuming I was cosplaying as "The Democratic Party".)

If you want to be Gyro, however, look for someone who has the Real Action Heroes figurine and get photos from multiple angles. That one's actual CLOTH, so you can make the outfit basically as shown...!
