Today is the 4th of July, a national holiday in USA. It is famous for fireworks and family cookouts.

Except the holiday isn't the 4th of July, it is Independence Day, celebrating the separation of the American Colonies from England. It was always inevitable, just the sheer distance from their 13 colonies.

The most independent I get is when I am under my own power, traveling the roads near and far. It is you alone in the world. On a bicycle there is no need to purchase fuel, even roads are not necessary. It is just you and your desire to be free and independent.

I took this self portrait on a road I traveled the day before. I was 25 miles from home enjoying a ride in the fall. Taken with a Hasselblad 500C with a Zeiss 80mm F2.8 Planar, on a tripod with Kodak color negative film
