Description Paint horse portrait, 24 x 32 cm, Mi-Teintes pastel paper, soft pastels and Derwent Pastel pencils, Reference by

I did this a little while ago, and didn't like how some of it came out. The composition is not good: the horse needs to be moved down (unfortunately not possible). The background didn't come out as I would have liked either. I also think that very light colors are pretty difficult to do in pastel (this horse has a lot of white in it)... But anyways, my mom and my niece liked it very very much, so I decided to give it to my niece (a little gift before Christmas XD). My niece likes horses and have few paintings and drawings that I've done in her room... I can't help giving her gifts, she is so dear to me<3!

Well, not much else to say about this one. It's a practice work that I did quite quickly and without planning too much. It was nice to get back to my pastels though!

Do not use any of my work without my written permission.

very pretty! Great anatomy, and I like the browns against the yellow/ochre background. Lovely details in the jaw and nostrils.

I can't tell you how many times I've done a portrait only to step back and see it's too far up the page or too far to one side, etc. I get so focused on the subject that I forget about composition.

And it's funny when we're self-critical. If you don't tell people what you find "wrong" with your work, they often don't see it. I love this piece (I mean let's be real, I love all your pastel work, but ya know ). That blue eye is perfect; I struggle with getting those to look right. And I love how subtly the tones in the face denote structure.

I find it useful to plan the portrait before I start it - especially the placement of things. It is pretty obvious that I didn't plan this one.

Self critique is a good thing... I try not to be to confident on my skills and abilities and always kind of doubt what I am doing. That thrives me to do even better!

Thank you for the support and lovely comment! Really means much to me!
