Description ~ Icon ~

A graphite pencil and golden pencil icon of Aidan as a monk.
___________________________________________________________
This is the first of my art collaborations with ! She drew the line art for this drawing when we met on our holiday in Barcelona earlier this month, and I shaded it, added the background and the golden pen. The drawing is based on some icons we saw when we visited theΒ Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya.

Here are some examples of Anglo-Saxon illuminated manuscript pages depicting monks:

Anglo Saxon monk 1 Β
Anglo Saxon monk 2 (possibly the Venerable Bede)
Group of monks

Aidan is the protagonist of my novel Sons of Disobedience. I'm enrolling him in the 7th round of , so you'll be seeing a lot more of him soon!

Gorgeous sketch! I love the way that you have echoed Charcoalfeather's style with this piece. The gold metallic pen used to shade this is inspired and definitely reminds me of a medieval fresco!
I really love how neatly drawn the frame is and the church buildings inside it is a great added detail.

Thank you, I'm glad it caught your attention! I enjoyed doing it and working with charcoalfeather (and watching her sketch it liveΒ especially! ) I'll draw Aidan in this style again soon.

This is lovely! I really like the manuscript feel of this and the way you made the background really look like goldleaf. I can't wait to see more of him. I have to say, I've been thinking of joining OC training as well, it sounds really fun. I'm afraid I wouldn't manage it time wise currently though.

Thank you very much! It would be wonderful if you joined!! You'd have to make a drawing every 7-10 days which may be pretty time consuming (and give feedback to your assigned teammates once in a while), but it's not compulsory that you meet all the deadline as long as you finish the tasks by the end of the training. Which character would you enroll?

Yeah, I think usually that would be quite manageable for me. But it seems June will be as bad as May was in terms of time for me... But perhaps I will try. I was thinking of Victor, the vampire boy from the modern story-line I have, just for a change. Alternatively it could be Rhode because I love drawing her...

Ah yes, I'd love to know more about that story, it would be interesting to see something from you set in our time!

Oh,Β Wow!Β  IΒ didn't expect him to be a monk at all!Β  Makes me even more curious about his story. Β  Love the gold in this.Β

Ah yup, he is a monk I'm thinking of imitating icon/ medieval manuscript style in the Guess Who drawing as well (but depicting him in way that's more representative for the whole novel).

Yay! I am glad that you chose Aidan!
Β  I can't wait to learn more about him!
Also, beautiful collab! Β I love the way you made it like a manuscript a monk would design!

This is really beautiful! I think you guys combined your work and totally nailed the look of an old illustrated manuscript, and graphite and gold is always a gorgeous combination.

Thanks a lot! I love the combination as well (I'll have to learn how to you use gold in other forms than a gel pen though )

Ha, to be honest I kind of love how it looks with gel pen! I'm in the same sort of boat where I want to learn to use actual gold leaf for the beautiful purity variation and texturing, but you can get some really cool effects from the texture of the pen lines. And in this case I love the pen effect, it's really visually interesting!

That is true. I'm glad you like it, I will definitely use it more soon (partly because I like and partly because I'm too afraid to start working with goldleaf) ^^

Wow, this is stunning! I'm so glad to finally see this posted and finished. I've been wondering for some time what this would look like once it was finished. I LOVE the way you did the golden texture behind his head and how much it looked like the icons we saw in the Museum! The abstract way you did the abbey behind him makes this look very, very much like a real historical icon.Β

You've shaded in his tunic very beautifully too. It's so smooth and the texture looks realistic. Now my drawing looks so complete!

I like how you've made the patterns on his collar stand out with the gold marker, as well

Thanks for the great comment and for the awesome drawing!!! You sketched it so fast, it was really fun to watch you draw, and I really wish we had had more time (and that I had my sketchbook and pencil with me xD) so that we could both have drawn something at the same time!

I'm very glad you like it, I had been wanting to do something like this for a long time (related to Aidan in the style of medieval art) and that visit to the museum was very inspiring. I'll have to do that drawing with Aidan's family that I was telling you about, with the "real" and the "medieval style" (coloured) versions There will be a lot of Aidan once I enroll him in the OC-Training next month, because I'll show him interacting with all the other characters, with little excerpts from the novel as well.

I knowww :/ Too bad that last day in particular was so rushed!! We should've gone to another art museum and drawn something there during real time, as well.Β

Oh yes, I can't wait to see that picture! It's going to be stunning. And a bit hilarious as we talked about, since medieval art styles tend to make people look very similar

And yay, Aidan's going to be enrolled in OC-Training! That means we're going to see a bunch of deviations just focused on him Will there be spoilers or no, btw? Will it be mostly about him during Sons of Disobedience or stuff from the sequel as well?

HelevornArt In reply to charcoalfeather [2017-05-27 19:35:05 +0000 UTC]

Ah yes, fun to draw too

I guess you already know most of the spoilers I'm willing to give anyway It's from Sons of Disobedience only, but maybe hints to what will happen in the sequel too.

Btw, I might be enrolling in that OC contest myself, but I'll have to see if I have time to do it AND all the exams and other nonsense I have to do in June (as well as my personal projects planned for the OCs). I was thinking that if I joined, I might use Katya? Or Ardalion? Who would you like to see?

HelevornArt In reply to charcoalfeather [2017-05-28 13:01:54 +0000 UTC]

Ah yeah, that would be so awesome!! It's only a drawing every 7-10 days, so for you it shouldn't be that big a problem. I think Katya, but it depends on which character you feel needs more developing and which you'd be more willing to focus on now. What about Sam or Yura? Well, you have 2 weeks and 2 days left to decide and enroll your OC anyway

charcoalfeather In reply to HelevornArt [2017-05-28 13:46:59 +0000 UTC]

Ah, good to hear it's only 7-10 days. I will definitely join!

I think Katya too. I want to do more stuff about her work life and her childhood. I can do Ardalion after her and then maybe consider Sam and Yura.
