Really amazing, I can relate when you say your art is a snap shot of a part of your life, it's amazing how things come together when you let go and just start creating.

Interesting! That is one of my favorite movies. It's in my collection and I've watched it many times, so perhaps some influence came through in this painting.

so amazing! what was your inspiration?

HisHalfElf In reply to TheGraceofCassandra [2013-02-07 17:51:46 +0000 UTC]
Hi Cassandra, thanks! This image started out as a traditional self-portrait, but changed and evolved a lot along the way. Many of the developments were spontaneous and based solely on a sense of what was aesthetically pleasing to me at the time. A lot of inspiration for this piece came from studying the paintings of Michael Hussar, whose skill in the application of paint, composition, lighting, and color theory has consistently drawn me in. However, Hussar's subject matter is quite dark and sometimes disturbing, so consequently this particular piece ending up being dark as well. If you compare this piece, "The Scapegoat", to my latest painting, "The Peak" [link] , you will see a stark difference in tone. In "The Peak", I studied a lot of romanticist painters and arrived at a much more balanced and positive image. Each of my paintings are a snap shot of my condition at a given period in life, which includes facets such as current influences, interests, and more. So each painting ends up looking very different from the last. I don't think I'll ever be an artist who creates 10 or 20 paintings that are of the same subject, same style, etc. because as I conduct my life processes of changing, growing, and maturing, the paintings, which are self-expressions, will reflect these new states. That said, I consider "The Scapegoat" to be a snap shot of me as I indulged in a variety of sensational symbols, pomp, vanity, and idolatry. The cut in the flesh of the upper cheek is a reminder that I narrowly dodged the bullet of these life-draining gratifications which would have ultimately led to my destruction. My unofficial title for this painting is "Aaron in Hell". In the future, I will do another self-portrait to go along with this one, but instead of Hell, it will be "Aaron in Heaven" essentially, or at least in some kind of resolved, sustainable peace.
