Horses were originally a polydactyl(multi toed) animal, even now the vestigial lump of a second toe is seen on the back of the fetlock. The very last of these have been accepted to still be around in early human times. Alexander the Great's horse, Bucephalus, is believed to have had two well visible vestigial, non functional toes per hoof. Occasionally even now a horse will be born with a recognisable extra toe.
Myth is often written on distorted fact.

That... may be one of the weirdest things I've seen. I spent some time grooming horses so I'm aware of the fetlock (thank you for the word) toe but only in a dewclaw kind of way. I did not know about Bucephalus. Pretty much all the unicorns I've seen were built like the modern horse, with the occasional beard so when I saw this most recent unicorn had cloven hooves, I mentioned it. It has been an educational moment for me, thank you Lynx and Dragons!

I've seen the cover for it, flipping through movies on Netflix but I've never watched it. I don't think they have beards either, at least not the one on the poster!
