The Final StandA Collab Written by: flygirlll26262 & hunterN05
A small bodied girl stood at a window staring outside at the gruesome scene behind the glass. Her light blue hood was up on her head, covering the blonde strands going down her back. A hand was raised, holding some of those strands of hair and her small fingers twirling the light strands between her fingers.
Behind that dirty glass; green eyes staring at; at least 50 infected monsters were crouched down, scraping at what looked like entrails and flesh from; who knows what. “This isn’t good…” small words escaped her mouth, the words barely making their way to the window.
Along the road walked three people, the leader armed with an M4 assault rifle, and his two companions with shotguns. The leader was wearing a tight black shirt, and black slacks, his dark brown eyes scanned the area ahead, eyeing the infected gathered on the road. “What in the hell’s going on?” He wondered aloud, flipping the safety off on his rifle as David limped to his side.
It had been a while since Kevin and his team came back from the city of Edenburg, and David had yet to fully heal from his wounds. Around his ankle he wore a wrapping, it helped to some degree. Sally stayed by his side, ready to help him should he need it.
Marigold’s eyes traveled and noticed three humans outside, looking somewhat familiar, “Maybe they’re from the faction…” her tiny words barely making it past her lips. “I hope that they are okay…”
Kevin and his allies watched the infected as they shambled down the road towards the Survivors faction, Shamblers and Runners all gathered together. Kevin raised his rifle, silently telling his comrades to move into the woods and out of sight. “Too many to take on by ourselves.” He noted, holding his rifle high as white fluffy clouds lazily passed overhead.
“Shouldn’t we be back at our own faction, Kevin?” David asked, hands trembling as he saw a few Carriers shambling in between the crowd of infected. “There’s gotta be over a hundred out here!”
“Then we’ll blast the fuck outta them!” Sally cackled silently, pumping a shell into her shotgun. Before she could fire however, Kevin pushed her gun barrel down. “What the hell?!”
He made a shushing motion with his finger, pointing ahead at the crowd. In between it all were several twitching infected, small framed with tattered clothing hanging onto their bodies. But beyond that, Kevin could make out several buildings nearby, and in the window of one of them, he saw a faint outline of someone standing inside. “Survivor Faction?” He wondered, eyes narrowing.
Seeing that what looked like the leader staring at her, Marigold tenderly lifted her hand in a slight greeting, hoping for some kind of response.
The leader of the remnants team saw her wave, and raised his own hand in a wave. Making a shushing motion once more towards her, he closed his fist, holding out his index and middle finger and making a half circle motion and gesturing to around the infected gathered outside.
“We got a contact inside the building.” Kevin told his two friends quietly as an infected passed by them from behind, one that had growths on its head blocking out its eyes and effectively making it blind. “We should see if she knows anything about what’s going on.”
Seeing the gestures, then them conversing, Marigold went to a back door that was blockaded with a dresser at the moment. She looked at it and scratched the back of her head, unsure of how to move it. She ran back to the window and pointed to the back after getting the leader’s attention again. She then shook her head, and started to make a strained face while pushing an invisible wall. She shook her head again, then pointed to her arms, poking them, trying to show that she wasn’t strong enough to move the back door. She then ran to the front door, and tried to get his attention from there.
The soldier frowned, making a humming noise, “I think we might have a problem.”
David gulped, shivering despite the weather conditions, “What kind of problem?”
“Whoever’s inside, I think the back door is blocked off and they can’t unblock it...” He sighed, head tilted to the side as he closed his eyes. “We’re going to have to sneak across the road...”
The goggle clad man shivered harder, clutching his shotgun to his chest like a lifeline. Sally, however, grinned madly, showing her teeth. “Fucking A.” She cackled.
Marigold frowned, seeing the leader looking so upset, “I’m sorry…” she muttered quietly.
Kevin shook his head at the girl, a hardened soldier like himself, teamed up with an insane girl from the country with more guts then rambo, and a guy who’d get scared at the sight of a rat. Checking his rifle, pulling back the lock and loading a round into the gun before looking out across the street. “Well... ” he smiled. “Do or die.” Raising his rifle to his shoulder, he led his team out of the woods, and across the road as a distant bang sounded from the opposite side of the woods where the building was.
The bang behind Marigold freaked her out, and she ran outside in her fright, then looked around horrified, as she realized that she was practically surrounded by monsters. Her eyes linked with the leader of the team across from her, horror easily seen in her emerald green eyes.
Kevin cursed to himself, flicking the safety off as he ran across the road. Sally grinned wickedly as she saw a few infected turn around and eyeball the remnants and the girl.
David just wondered if god was playing some sick game with him. “Why me?” He wondered, holding his gun up and pumping a shell into the barrel.
Some sense returned to the blonde teen, then she slowly and cautiously pulled out the small SOG knife that was always in her pocket. The small blade was then flicked out, her breathing going deeper and faster, nearly hyperventilating.
Kevin mimicked her action, holstering his own gun and pulling out his combat knife, the steel cleaned recently and shining faintly from the sunlight. Sally and David both pulled out their respective weapons, David and his machete, and Sally with her hunting knife. However the girl still kept her shotgun out and held in one hand, still grinning.
All three got into a combat stance as a few infected wandered over, one of them lunging for Kevin who backstepped and punched it in the face, making the infected stumble back with a faint growl. The soldier grabbed onto its shoulder, shoving the blade of his knife into the bottom of its jaw and up into its brain, killing it. He gently dropped the body, moving over to the young blonde as David chopped at an infected with a terrified expression on his face.
A few noises escaped David as he chopped off the arm of the infected that looked like it belonged in a perfume commercial, the infected lunged at David, until he stabbed it in the chest. “Help help help!” David whispered harshly to Sally, who had roundhouse kicked her infected enemy in the head with her boot, cracking its jaw. The girl went over and grabbed the infected, pulling it off of David and to both of her teammates horror, threw it to the side and blew its head off with her shotgun.
“Oh no, oh no!” Marigold muttered, her eyes going wide as she darted over to them, her footsteps making no noise at all.
The boom sounded all around, getting the infected crowd’s attention solely on her.
The blonde looked up at Kevin, “We’ve gotta get out of here!” She looked up at him desperately.
“God damn it!” Kevin cursed, watching as Sally backed up into the woods, firing on the infected crowd. Her blasts taking out a few of them and pulling all of their attention on her. He was about to fire, but saw Sally give him a look.
“Get the fuck outta here!” She screamed, blasting another infected in the body, sending it flying back into the crowd as a few runners chase after her. “Come and get some baby!” She cackled, firing off blast after blast as she led the infected away, deep into the woods leaving her teammates behind.
“We gotta go after her!” David told Kevin, watching as the infected bounding over broken trees and past bushes after the girl.
Kevin growled under his breath, before he could do anything, more infected came out of nowhere, spotting Kevin, David and Marigold, “Damn it all to hell.”
“We’ve gotta go! We’ll find her later!” The blonde shouted, her voice being the loudest it’s ever been the others have heard so far. She tugged gently on both of their sleeves, trying to propel them on.
Kevin frowned as Sally disappeared, grabbing David he looked to Mari. “Where do we go, kid?” He asked, holding his rifle with one hand and David up with the other. If they had to run, it wasn’t going to end well for either him or David, giving his injured ankle.
Marigold nodded, “There’s a small cottage that way” she pointed away from the road. “It’s about a mile, but last time I went through there…” a small shiver made her shoulders shake.
“Damned if we do and damned it we don’t.” David groaned, “why can’t anything ever be easy!?”
Kevin ignored him, gesturing to the road ahead. “Lead us on kid, David and I will hold them back.” He told her.
The blonde seemed to tense up to the name David ever so slightly, looking at the injured man in Kevin’s arm, letting out a small sigh of relief. “Okay, and my name is Marigold” she gave a small gentle smile. She then started to lead the way through the forest.
“I’m Kevin,” the soldier introduced himself, returning her smile with one of his own. “Let’s hope we can find this cottage.” He hoped they would otherwise…
They were doomed.
