"Threnodis, or The Charnel Bard as it is also called, although its True Name is unknown, may appear in a fateful dream as a cloaked street musician or similar guise. Its haunting lament is said to be both dissonant and melodic; impossible to forget, yet equally difficult to replicate or transcribe. Those who have heard it best have their earthly matters in order, for the coda is nigh.
Some have theorized that if their own melody could be mastered, that death could be staved off indefinitely, though there is no documented case of this happening. Like others of his kind, Threnodis may be defeated and bound to one’s own Tome and summoned as a powerful ally.
Legend tells that eons ago on the eve of a decisive battle, Threnodis appeared in the sky before the great army of Niza and played while the ranks waited to strike at dawn. By the time the sun rose the following morning, the soldiers were so disheartened by the Bard’s fugue that they all laid down their swords without a fight, at least those that hadn’t fallen upon them during the night."
