Description

Balto: Wolf Quest was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid, I dare to say that I liked it even more than the first movie. Saying that, Aleu was my favorite character from this trilogy, so I decided to draw her again and while I was drawing, I started thinking about an AU story for her.

Maybe it would be interesting if Aleu was instead adopted. But since she is more wolf than her father, she was a bit too wild to be a house pet. She would still be naive, but different kind than shown in the movie, the kind she is the one who thinks that she's smarter than everyone else.

In this AU, Balto would've been adopted by Rosie's family after she asked "pretty please" to her parents let the wolfdog stay with them. Both were a bit reluctant about this idea, but they ended up agreeing upon letting him stay for a while, after all, Balto saved their only child. It was just temporary, except that Balto has proven to be a very calm and lovable pet, so the family grew attached to him, much for Jenna's delight.

As time went on, Balto and Jenna had their first and maybe only litter. They were proud parents of six perfectly healthy little puppies, and they were overjoyed. As first time parents, they didn't ace parenthood, but they were doing their best, no doubt. Even with Boris' help, it was very difficult taking care of six distinct new individuals. Each pup had their own particularities, everything was something new to them.

When the pups were put up for adoption, everyone wanted a miniature of the town's hero. Most people wanted the puppies to become the new champion in sled dog races, others wanted them for status, a few just wanted to have a new house dog. Rosie's parents gave preference to people they knew would be good owners beforehand, especially if they had children that would be very happy to get a new puppy. Quickly, all puppies were taken, including Aleu. Balto and Jenna were heartbroken, but they understood the pups needed to follow their own path, they would be happy with their new families.

Or so they thought…

Aleu didn't adapt well in her new home, she was too energetic and messy, didn't really obey the rules, howled a lot and too loud, causing so much trouble to the point her new owners gave her back to Rosie's parents. Not them nor Balto and Jenna thought too much about it. They weren't expecting that all puppies would settle down in a new home on their first try. Maybe Aleu not adapting to this home was just not meant to be, it didn't mean that have anything wrong with her.

So they tried again…

And again…

And again.

It was four times total, and Aleu wasn't able to stay at any new home for more than two months max. Rosie's parents just gave up trying to find another place for her, so they kept the little wolfdog, hoping that with enough training, she would behave better with time, which wasn't the case. Aleu didn't have the old bad habits anymore, like messing around at home, so she wasn't really a problem for her owners, but she was known for steal food from houses and local stores, pick on some dogs, sometimes leading to fights and being some sort of trouble in general.

Her owners tried to keep her at home but she was always able to escape and wander through the town doing her usuals misfits. The situation was so critical that a few people started to argue with Rosie's parents, even threatening to kill Aleu if they wouldn't stop her. Of course Balto and Jenna asked, begging multiple times to Aleu stop and realize that her actions have consequences, however she was always able to get away with it so far, why stop now?

Until one day her plan didn't really go as she planned while she was stealing food from a house on the other side of the town. She made a mistake and woke up an old and not very friendly man, who got his gun beside his bed and started shooting in Aleu direction. She ran away with the man trailing right behind her. Running deep inside a nearby forest, Aleu was capable of losing her pursuer. But she wasn't sure she wanted come back to Nome.

Well, this is my idea for a Balto, AU, I'm still working on how it will unfold.
