I love this picture.Β Every aspect of it provokes thought about why each piece is incorporated.Β The two things I enjoy most are the finger-like spires surrounding the shrine.Β It tells me that even though they worship Karn he is still in the palm of the phyrexians.Β Or like he is being held there in their grasp.Β The other thing I noticed was the hexagonal pattern on the ground like a bee hive.Β Since the phyrexians are very hive minded it fits the subject very well.

This looks a lot like something that could be in Prometheus. Phyrexia as a whole just looks like a part of Giger's mind.
I am very curious -- does Wizards of the Coast point the artists who do Phrexian art specifically towards Giger or does that just end up happening because the desired aesthetic is so similar to his?

I'm pretty sure there were no direct references to Giger in NPH style guide, though pretty much everyone involved must have seen Alien and thus be exposed to at least some of Giger's work. In any case, if you're doing organic horror machines you're pretty much bound do get close to his work in some way.

Somehow, I think I can see similarities to the Karn Liberated card (all hail the father of machines). The cords(?) attached to it make it seem like a sci-fi demon cult's altar. Awesome.
