It's one of a family of plants called the bromeliads which usually life in hot, humid forests. Some species have their ownlittle eco=system in the pool of water at the centre. This may include frogs and insects. I believe the pineapple is a bromeliad which happens by some happy chance to be edible. The place we get to see them in here in London is called Kew Gardens, where there are conservatories which provide a suitable environment. Here are a few I encountered: [link] .

I too love this plant and have no idea what it's called. I got a couple pictures in my gallery of one too that I had found in a botanical garden. It's a different color but has that same cool center where it looks like it has it's own little plant inside with flowers.

They may just be another color variant. They are so cool looking. I think it looks cool in the center, because it's almost like it's growing another plant inside.
