I -love- the way everything flows smoothly in this picture, but as far as overall effect, I prefer the other version. It had a lot more detail to it. This Medusa also seems far too innocent and sweet for someone who had been transformed into a monster, although I will admit it's an interesting concept.

I'm about due to try this theme again. It will be interesting to see what comes of it since my preferred media is now acrylic. I'm debating if I should stick with pencil for continuite and easier style comparison though.

Of the three Gorgons, Medusa was the only mortal. Athena was ticked off with her for being a bit more than friends with Poseidon and turned her beautiful blond hair into serpents.
The concept of the gorgon in myth is at least as old a Zeus and is probably part of and older Greek folklore that was adopted by later Greeks. Medusa springs from the same origin as the mermaid (a corruption of the Greek name) who was a sea and serpant god of the old order.

Ugly Gorgons are also historicly accurate... depending on which ancient writer you read. Some said the three of them had one eye and one tooth among them... which they shared.

Very beautiful picture, I love her muscular-looking snake-body but she looks a little thin where human torso meets snake tail...

You've most definitely improved on it. This one's evil yet seductive which is very much what madusa should be. She looks innocent as well which very much adds to the character. Amazing work as always.

Those are actually normal human proportions. They are normally balenced out by a larger posterior. That may cause that effect.

personally, I like this version better than the other one Giving up the scales for the snakes was a good trade off, I like the fact that you used little tiny snakes instead of huge fat ones for her hair. The shading is really good as well, I like the how smooth her tail looks, the only way I could suggest making it better would be to make her facial features a touch bigger (not too much, but as is they seem a bit too small) and her far arm seems, shapeless, and a bit too thin down towards the bottom of it. Maybe lightening a bit of the shading will give it some definition.

Thank for your comment. I never thought of her as looking vain but now that you mention it there is definitly a touch of that. It would be fitting since the myth is that she was so beautiful that a goddess became envious and turned her into a medusa.
