Description

I love magnolia flowers so much! In spring, I often draw at a botanical garden nearby just to see them bloom in person. This year, they lost their flowers pretty fast, within few days, but I managed to take a lot of photoreferences to get me through the year Do you like magnolias as well?

This original is still AVAILABLE at my  STORE, as well as beautiful fine art prints

The strongest impression I get from this is a sense of warmth, from the way the blue background contrasts the light and reddish shades of pinks used for the flowers themselves- the idea that something is fresh, or renewed, or seeing the light again, especially with how the general direction of the flowers and the petals face upwards. The use of pinks in the background and subtle blue-purple in the shade of the petals harmonizes the colour palette of the piece very nicely, along with the hint of yellows to bring more focus to the flowers themselves. Speaking of focus! The way that you've bled the pigments in the background into soft, indistinct shapes certainly highlights the wonderful sharpness of the foreground brilliantly, and gives the painting an underlying sense of a dream-state.

A couple of alternate executions of this piece that I think may be interesting concepts to explore are increasing the saturation on the flowers a bit, and having the stems be darker against a slightly lighter background- the former, I think, could push the tone of the piece a bit into something more distinctly other-wordly area, while the latter would separate the stems from the background some more and create more definition between what's close and what's further away.

Overall, this is an incredibly lovely piece and I couldn't help but leave a thorough critique on it! The lighting and colours have been used very effectively and the flowers themselves look both believably real in shape and interesting in style. Lovely work!

You really left a very thoughtful critique, which I am incredibly grateful for. Your thoughts on the subject help me a lot, especially since I don't get this kind of overview from people often.

I will think about what you wrote and try to incorporate this in newer works. Speaking of color explorations, I painted this subject three times, in different dimensions and background of the color. This one is the most successful attempt so far and I am tempted to publish the other two as well.

Once again, your time and input is really appreciated

It was my absolute pleasure! It's always good to get an outside perspective on something if you want to improve on it, and I was glad to be of assistance!

It would definitely be interesting to see the other versions of this, particularly to compare the similarities and differences between them and see how the concept developed in different ways

You're welcome

I love magnolias too. In germany they're called tulip tree and I go watch them every year with my mother in the botanical garden.

Many thanks I loved this paper for holding the color quite bright, thats one thing very rare with watercolor, sadly.

I appreciate your comment!

It is a tree and it blooms only during spring, and shortly. But its worth checking it out

I checked out all your drawings, all of them. Each one is unique and looks special in some way, the only one I didn't understand is Inktober day 16. You are a great and talented artist. Keep up the good work.

Well there is not much to understand, the month was a bit pressuring (I am not sure how I managed to do every single day of Inktober back then, because I was full time employee and did art only during evenings), so from time to time I ran out of ideas and just experimented with combinations of faces and abstract shapes
