Description Last entry, I said farewell to my Canon Rebel XTi, a dependable little workhorse camera we had converted to infrared almost two years back. Today, I introduce the XTi's replacement: A Canon 50D, converted to 720nm infrared by LifePixel, the same folks who converted the XTi. The upgrade is, well, nice. Better noise control and higher ISOs. Larger file sizes (photographers often gripe about the megapixel wars--for good reason--but in some cases bigger is indeed better). A more robust build. Better (and faster) autofocus. Live View (which I normally don't like, but it really helps nail focus with quirky lenses such as the EF-S 10-22mm). I have created some stellar infrared images with this camera, which I'll be sharing here shortly. Just about the only downside to it is the baffling fact that Canon chose to make the 50D incompatible with their simple remote that works with pretty much every other camera body in their lineup. In fact, as far as I can tell, Canon makes no remote for the 50D, which explains the odd, aftermarket Phottix remote attached to the hotshoe in this image. Still, despite that one shortcoming, I expect the 50D will acquit itself very well in the coming years... at least until we get the 5D mark II converted.

Congrats on the upgrade Jayme! Made a similar upgrade myself. LOVE the live view for AF. Tack sharp IRs nearly 100% of the time.

Congrats - I hope to retire my converted XS in favor of the converting the 50D at some point, (when money flows like water from the sky. . .). I am curious about your comment on the 10-22. I have been unable to get usable results with the XS using that lens, despite fine results with the unconverted 50D. It did not occur to me that the problem might simply be using auto-focus with IR. What can you tell me about it?

From what I understand, the EF-S 10-22 has a "floating" IR focal point that varies significantly depending on zoom. So what I do is set it at f/8-f/11 with gives me a very deep field of view with this ultrawide. I'll use AF targeting my rough estimate of hyperfocal distance if I'm shooting landscapes or whatnot. That gave me solid results. Now that I've got the 50D with Live View ability, I'll manually focus using the 10x magnify view to really nail it (the Live View feed comes directly from the image sensor, so if it's sharp on LV, it's sharp, period). I still mostly shoot AF at narrow apertures, but if I'm shooting people them I'll tripod it and fine focus with LV.

Thanks for your quick and enlightening answer. A "floating" focal point - more proof (if needed) that lenses are not designed with infrared use in mind! I'll need to do some tripod based tests to see if manual focus is an improvement - luckily the XS has Live View.

The floating IR focal point is not uncommon with zoom lenses. One older zoom I saw once had three different markings for different focal lengths.

And honestly, I don't think *any* lenses have ever been designed with IR in mind. It's just a happy accident that some happen to be useful that way!
