What's truely scary is tentacle por predates even him, there's a story about man's  wife dreaming  (forgot if he was fisherman or farmer) she was assaulted by an octopus.  I double checked and he was fisherman. Katsushika Hokusai was the artist who made the painting upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia… Beware the image may be disturbing but since my comment is educational I hope people won't take offesne.

Yes, I have seen that picture. It's called "The Fisherman's Wife". It does appear the octopus is giving her oral sex. Since there isn't a complete translation, it's unclear if the relationship is consensual. It does suggest an interest in tentacles has a historical basis in Japanese art.

Actually, I didn't know that. But, I suspect there are a lot of things that went on in the 19th century that would surprise people in the 21st. My grandmother saw the original "Frankenstein" and found it very scary. I wonder what a movie audience from the 1930's would have thought of Ridley Scott's "Alien"?

Considering people were scared shitless when a recording of train arrivig to station was shown in theatere for 1st time and people were runnng out screaming, chest bursting scene may just kill some people in the sits. I wrote book report in middle school on Frankenstein novel when I was in 2nd grade and my teacher was terrified that my parents would let me do that and then my friend turned in report on Dracula. Basicly we complained for almost whole school year about boring themes for writting esseys and the teacher caved in under preassure ednding up with 24 esseys with very disturbing themes. I was even argumenting why we should be allowed to bring people back from the dead. We ended up with no restrictions for writting esseys for the rest of middle school.

I've heard that when Ridley Scott did test screenings of the first "Alien" movie people would stand in the back of the theatre and very few people would sit near the screen. People would keep leaving the showing and stand in the lobby. I didn't see the movie until several years later when it out on blue-ray. My sister's co-worker friend saw "Alien" in a theatre and it scared her so bad she slept with the lights on for a week afterward. I think the lead up with the face hugger wrapped around John Hurt's head was bad because you just know it's going to get worse. The scene that bothered me was the second movie where Ripley and the little girl are locked in the dark lab with the face-huggers chasing them. That did made me squirm at little. Now Alien Covenant I rented from Redbox and frankly the whole business has gotten tedious.
I personally don't care much for vampires, werewolves, etc. except for "Underworld" mainly because of Kate Beckinsale in that tight leather outfit.

Chest bursting scene was filmed without actors being informed what exaly would happen so the screams were genuine.

I heard they rehearsed it without telling the actors just how bloody the actual scene was going to be. You are right, the expressions of shock were very realistic. What is horrifying is the idea of some alien fetus eating you from the inside out.
