My favourite sound, is the tinkling sound of the ice as it melts and falls apart in spring...it's magical.
The loud bass sounds of cracking ice are the most frightening thing to hear, specially when you are way too far from shore to even THINK about getting away.
I think it's better that we do get frightened by it...those that don't have to be idiots...and sometimes...DEAD idiots.
Happens all the time around here.
One of my reasons that I started posting pictures online is I wanted people to think of Keswick as MORE than just the place where people drown.
It's pretty much the only time we get mentioned on the news.

Thats sad, but its good that you are trying to get people to see you for other things that those tragedies. Maybe it can also make people more aware of the dangers involved with being out on the ice.
We had a death here (in Sweden) yesterday, 2 people went through the ice, only one of them made it. It dosent happen very often here, that I know of. It was really sad and shocking to hear.

Happens far too often here.
I tried to find a link to one story about HUNDREDS of people having to be evacuated from the ice flow that broke off from the shore while they were busy fishing.
I think it was in the seventies.

If they ain't going through the ice, they're cracking up their snowmobiles.
We had two fatalities so far, both in the same weekend.
After this warm spell, I fully expect to hear the number has grown this weekend.
