My "Star Wars The Clone Wars" review

[SPOILERS]

I really enjoyed it. Now I've said more than once I didn't like the character designs (the droids and vehicles don't look much different from the live-action movies), and there does seem to be a lot of criticism about it in the reviews, but then there are a lot of shows with very cheap looking designs that are very good. Like the first "Clone Wars" cartoon for instance, whose look I hated just as much if not more so. But less than 20 minutes into the movie I was used to it, I'll probably never grow to like it like I did with Bruce Timm's style in the "Batman"-through-"Justice League" series, but it's not going to be a problem while watching the new show. Being released theatrically did open this movie up for it being compared to Pixar and Dreamworks but when you consider that they spend about 100 to 200 million dollars more, "The Clone Wars" looks outstanding. "The Clone Wars" will definitely be the Pixar of television. There has never been anything of its quality on TV before.

On to the story itself.

I knew ahead of time that they weren't going to have the opening crawl and John Williams' unaltered score (though they did have the "A long time ago..." so that was great to see, probably for the last time, on the big screen) so I wasn't caught off guard. The opening narration was jarring the first time I saw/heard it (I've seen the film twice so far), but then it served it's purpose the same way the opening crawl did, probably a little better since you could actually see what it was talking about. Personally, I'm glad they kept the opening crawl an exclusive movie trademark (the countless video games that use opening crawls and Mr. Williams' theme notwithstanding ), but I just know from now on, I'm going to hear that narrator's voice every time I watch one of the movies, if not impersonate it myself, while I read the crawl .

Caught up to speed the movie wastes little time getting into the action with ObiWan and Anakin in mid-battle. Star Wars is at its best doing action. And, as promised, the Jedi action isn't as over-the-top as in the 2D "Clone Wars" or upcoming "Force Unleashed" video game. They easily could've done the battles and lightsaber duels in live action (easily being with millions of dollars more and a couple of years production time of course ), but being animation they can churn out battles of this quality on a weekly basis. The verticle battle of Teth, with Anakin, Ahsoka, the Troops, and walkers climbing straight up a cliff, is now one of my all-time favorite Star Wars action scenes.

Which brings us to Ahsoka.

I love Ahsoka. She turned out much better than I could hope. As much as all the reviews seem to bash the inferiority of "The Clone Wars" to Pixar, they seem to be universal in their annoyance with Ahsoka. Ahsoka does have an attitude but if you watch the scene of her coming off the drop-ship Anakin is already copping a 'tude while she's addressing him and Obiwan both respectfully (maybe we're just used to Anakin's attitude ). It's not until she tells him she's his Padawan and Anakin goes ape-Sith that her attitude starts. And she does sometimes charge head-on into situations that causes more trouble (like with the shield generator) but until she does something worse than Anakin's "I'm taking him NOW!" it's nothing unforgivable. She is much younger and obviously has a lot to learn.

And the fact I have three nieces may have a lot to do with how much I love their interaction with each other. Their banter seems just as much older brother/younger sister as it does mentor/student, and their situation isn't unlike Obiwan and Anakin's situation in the beginning. Their nicknames for each other, "Skyguy" and "Snips", would be total nitpicks for me to be annoyed by them (okay, "R-tooie" does come close to grinding my gears, but again, nothing I would blog about).

I wasn't too thrill about that reverse-grip lightsaber style that Vader's secret apprentice is going to use in the "Force Unleashed" video game, but actually seeing it in action (Ahsoka uses this style) I'm actually sold on it.

The kidnapping plot of Jabba's son (yeah Stinky is the cutest slug) is what it is. Considering all the cool things they did surrounding that plot I can't complain about it.

And people are just making too big a deal about Jabba's uncle Ziro, whether his seemingly "gayness" is the actual criticism, that he speaks basic, or that he speaks it with a southern accent. Now, why would a southern accent need to be explained anymore than an english accent? ( Texans represent!!! -- even though I don't have a southern accent myself )

Speaking of gay english guys . . . I thought Obiwan was great! Sorry, couldn't help myself . But Obiwan had that Ewan coolness going. I really enjoyed his negotiations over tea with General Loathsome (who was this guy's parents?). His duel with Ventress was one of the film's highlights. And maybe it's my imagination but did it seem like he was getting some kind of (maybe) sadistic pleasure seeing Anakin deal with his new Padawan? I certainly look forward to seeing how Ahsoka effects the dynamic of their team.

Ventress was much better here than she was in the first "Clone Wars" series, but with how little screen time she had then, that's a given. Dooku also benefited from the extra screen time as well. Really nice to see Christopher Lee chew up the scenes showcasing Dooku as Sidious' righthand man. From what I hear Mr. Lee isn't going to continue Dooku in the series, which is a damn shame. Hopefully Samuel Jackson will be on the show considering the very small role he had here.

Have to mention how good it was seeing action Padme again after her hiatus in "Revenge of the Sith". I kicked myself for not noticing Mission Vao's voice coming from her the first time I saw the movie, which just shows how well it works as Padme's voice.

Last but not least . . . the clones.

They were great (of course anyone who would paint a Twi'lek in trooper armor on the side of a dropship can't be bad ) Rex seems to have become a instant fan favorite, of course he does have the advantage of not being Anakin's Padawan, therefore not a target of undue bashing. The dude is obviously a badass. He loses nearly his entire battalion twice (in a row) and still ready to continue fighting. Even though he couldn't resist Ventress' mind trick, I love how he was still able to warn Anakin (HAH!!! In yo' face, Traviss! This is how you create badasses without having to Mary Sue the entire race!! . . . Sorry, couldn't help myself again ).

And yes there are some things that were more than nitpicks.

The animation itself. While not terrible, it didn't flow very well a lot of times, even things as simple as walking. It was also noticable during the lightsaber duels, specifically the Obiwan/Ventress duel. But, especially if they're filming in chronological order, they are improving. The Anakin/Dooku duel looked much better and Ahsoka fighting the Magnadroids also looked good. The duels were on par with the ones in the 2D "Clone Wars" but CGI animation has the advantage of being 3D and having motion capture so here's hoping they start using it. I'd put is as equal to Pixar's first Toy Story and Dreamworks' first Shrek movies, so they do have a bit of catching up to do. But, again, if this had been a $100 million + production it would definitely be a glaring flaw.

The dialogue and acting. Again on par with the live action movies and I do mean all six movies (the "original" movies weren't THAT much better). While some of the lines were groanworthy, they were mostly there to service the story. There was a repetition of the plot being laid out, a lot, but that's more than likely a side-effect of the movie originally starting out as three episodes. Speaking of which, the hour and a half running time would suggest that the premiere episode was going to be an hour long anyway. I'd say it would have consisted of the Christophsis and first Teth battles. The second episode being the escape from Teth and crashlanding on Tatooine, and the third ep being the Padme adventure and conclusion on Tatooine.

My breakdown:

Things I loved/liked-

Ahsoka
Anakin/Ahsoka interaction
Obiwan
Ventress
Dooku
Clones
The battles
Ziro's "RUN!" would have made me spit out my soda (had I been willing to pay $4 for a soda)

Things I didn't like so much-

The character designs (but that's just my own personal taste)
The animation at times - the dancing Twi-leks were just a crime to the Twi'lek stereo-type

**

So "The Clones Wars" is off to a good start. If they can keep this level of quality up for the series, the show should blow away all other animated shows (unfortunately, with Avatar ended that won't be much of a challenge now). Very much looking forward to seeing these as well as other background characters from the movies get their chance in the spotlight.

So don't let the negative reviews sway you, give it a chance and decide for yourself. Anyone who hated the "prequels" are going to hate "The Clone Wars", even moreso it seems.

I loved it and wanna smack the haters. If it weren't for Ahsoka, I wouldn't have gotten into Star Wars (my lifes focus for 5 years). So I get VERY upset when people call her a mary sue, idiots don't know what the're talking about!

Anakin might actually have some traits that make him a tragic hero, vice being a whiner.

Personally I prefer 2-d animation to 3-d, always have, especially with this movie.

The 3-d makes all the characters look like they were carved out of stone.

Also, the legs were too long on everyone, I noticed that constantly.

The action was nice, not nearly as bad as people were saying it was going to be.

I did like Ahsoka's interaction with Anakin, it was nice to see someone bring him down to a more human level rather than him seeming to be a evil jerk the entire movie, though the nicknames I could do without, they just made me feel stupid to hear.

Overall, you're right, its not bad, the acting is good voice wise, and the animation is as good as it could be in 3-d for a tv series probobly, though still too blocky.

Hm I don't know what's wrong with Traviss? I heard that some people do not like her books for some reason.
I liked the movie... it was a kid's movie, immature, but funny.
I heard a great many fans complaining that: "Ashoke does not behave herself like a true jedi. She is impatient, aggressive and disrespectful".
Oh my, she is being tought by Anakin Skywalker. The most disobidient and willful Knight that could be found in that era. What did they excepted her to behave like? It is only natural that she follows Anakin's example.

Taking the film seriously, I'm not sure that a padawan of Ashoka's age should be in battle. She is a Padawan, yes, but putting her on the front line seems a bit harsh. I mean that a 11-13 years old girl is not someone that should charge a battle droid. At least in the Star Wars universe / real life.

The Clones are cool. But the clones are always cool.
And yes, Ziro the Hutt seems a little gay...

Joseph, what is the problem with the Twi'leks? They looked like Twi'leks to me.

The TV show is good too.

It's nice to see another serious Star Wars fan who actually liked the movie. One of the big things I think a lot of reviewers forgot about was this is was first and foremost a kids movie and secondly a Star Wars movie.

That being said I think they might have overdone the kids movie bit a little too much, with things such as bad jokes and reiterating the plotline too many times, but on the other hand I guess kids need that. XD

Anyways I liked how it and the TV series fits into the continuity, except for one glaring point...Anakin NEVER became a Jedi Master he barely became a knight in episode III. I can understand him being allowed to "master" a pupil, you know Jacen Solo and Ben Skywalker type of thing, but the "General Skywalker"s and "Master Skywalker"s started to get to me after a while. And I don't believe jedi get field promotions either...>.<

And hey! I like Karen Traviss and her Mando'ade.
I think they're adorable. That and Karen Traviss is the only EU author with books still coming out that's really worth reading anymore. Don't get me started on the crap that was Jedi Twilight.

XD Also I like the curse word "Fierfek", it's cute.

Thanks. I'm glad you like it. And I have quite a few more TCW pics planned, I just need to find the time to do them

And if you think about it, with the exception of Anakin, Padme, and Leia, Han (do we really want to count Luke's crush on his own sister ?) all the other characters in the movies can easily pull a "Dumbledore". Yeah, I'm sure there's a lot of "C" canon people can pull out of their butts but this is a "G" canon dicussion (I'm really starting to love the new canon rating system ).

I'm not really much into merchandise. Novelizations at the most, and of course the DVDs for this show as they come out.

"I've always wondered if there was a "Heaven & Hell" belief in the Star Wars Universe."

In Han's case (or anyone from Corellia), it's a reference to "Corellia's Nine Hells," which came up somewhere at some time--as in, sending someone there. It's in the Corellian lore, anyway, from someplace/some book. I know I've heard of it before, so there, at least.

This is great--I haven't seen the film (but always love to read your takes on things!), and honestly, it's great to hear that Anakin gets a padawan that gives him as much grief as he gave Master Obi-Wan! Terrific framing here, with me wondering who she's squaring off with (back-handed grip works fine for me--I think it's cool!). Beautiful light in this--you're so good at that!

Considering all the many religions we have, all the versions of god, heaven and hell (or if there is either) and that's just on our one little planet. Star Wars has a whole galaxy so the possibilities are pretty endless.

I do love Ahsoka now, already have a few ideas for new pics of her. But I really didn't give much thought on this pic of her. I just wanted an original pic to post with this review. So I probably shouldn't have revealed that

While the 2D "Clone Wars" can be a bit over the top and unbelievable (pretty much everything Windu does) there are some really good things about it. Ventress (though her first appearance is a little outrageous) her duel with Anakin is actually one of the best things about the show.

Actually, I thought Jabba's "uncle" was really cool, if for no other reason then finally getting to see a hutt with a female-dominant personality (for those who don't know, hutts are hermaphrodites).

Also, in a way I agree with what ~Pheonix023 said. The Mandalorians (And by genetic extension the clones) may simply be too badass for the Force to work on them (that's why the Jedi where so easily curbstumped by them in Ep. III ).

As for the pic itself . . . badass. Now I'm just left wondering if this is what she'll look like as the war wears on.

It took everyone off guard. I really don't think anyone but Palpatine knew what was going to happen, and even then he was just reacting because the Jedi had discovered his identity, had they not . . . Well, I think he probably would have just destroyed the Order through some legal mumbo-jumbo so that no-one could possibly challenge him. (Hey, which is scarier, the Sith or a massive pack of lawyers?) But damn, I'd really hate to see the suicide/desertion rates after Order 66; I mean, once the full effect of what they've done sinks in . . .

JosephB222 In reply to CodyMacArthurFett [2008-08-25 18:50:18 +0000 UTC]

I get the feeling Palpatine always planned on using the 66 Order to wipe the Jedi out. And he was probably thinking the Jedi would soon try to remove him from office, considering the way he set up Greivous to be destroyed and made his final push in turning Anakin to the dark side by revealing himself to be a Sith Lord. Anakin helping him kill Windu was just very convenient.

CodyMacArthurFett In reply to JosephB222 [2008-11-05 16:32:05 +0000 UTC]

Well, after reading Order 66 I have to say that you were right. Palpatine was planning the destruction of the Jedi via Order 66 for quite some time. I mean, sure, it was a crazy ass Xanatos Gambit that relied heavily on a Redshirt Army of Mooks flash-trained at the Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy , but hey, it worked didn't it? . . . At least until those damn Rebels started their Heroic Struggle against the Forces of Darkness.

Damn do-good-ers, always messing things up.

Really? I always thought of him as making things up as he went along to a certain extent, while still having all the bases covered. I mean, if the Seps win he's still the shadowy Dark Lord of the Sith in command of the whole shebang, if the Republic wins he's sitin' high and mighty in his office, if the Jedi get out of line he'll just execute Order 66, and if someone figures everything out and initiates Order 65 . . . Well, no-one has every angle figured out.

As for the review: I agree, generally (though I haven't had the chance to see in english yet). I'm not certain if it could stand alone as a movie, to be honest, but it absolutely works as a TV show, and I absolutely did not regret watching it in cinema. Congradulations on doing the first picture of Ahsoka I've seen so far where she's holding her lightsaber correctly, like she really does instead of how everyone else does. I thought that was a very interesting way to make her unique.

About your actual review: Of course I could do my own spiel, but I'll make this quick--

I want to see it, but I'll wait for the video. For me, aesthetics are everything and the art direction isn't really something I like enough to pay a movie ticket price to see. However, I'm curious about the story and how Star Wars plays out in CG animated style.

Nice supporting artwork there too. You've got the style nailed.

Yeah, once you get used to the look you can really enjoy it. And I'm glad you like the pic.
