I have a habit of mentally hoarding TeaFeathers world building stuff, so I thought I'd post stuff about Nym's brother that's never been posted publicly! CONTENT WARNING; FAMILY DEATH, DISEASE, GRIEF
Remember how Nym experienced a big loss that drove her to the Fern Sleep ? That loss was Lyn. I haven't worked out the full details of his death yet, but I decided a while ago that he becomes a victim of the night spores (warning for body horror) when he's a young adult, before Nym becomes one of the Harp's Guard. Even before the pandemic, I was worried this might be too gruesome of a death for Lyn. Covid had me rolling his method of demise over in my mind a lot, possibly wanting to avoid respiratory disease used in this way. But there's a reason I am sticking with it.
As Nym's story progress, one of her key hallmarks is the growing ability to communicate with things that are otherwise enigmatic. She eventually is able to make mental contact with the collective consciousness of the Night Spores, where traces of the memories and feelings of their victims are stored. Through that contact she is able to relive some of Lyn's experiences through his eyes, and gains the ability to do just a *pinch* of fire magic (fire breath). Magic use is kind of like muscle memory, in that it's an action you do without thinking hard about it, with just a feeling. Nym gets to feel what doing fire magic is like through Lyn's memories!
Lyn's loss drives Nym to seek brotherhood with other alecani, which is the real reason she joins the Harp's Guard. She not only feels like getting away from the places she made memories with her sibling, but sees a lot of Lyn in Shadow. He becomes her surrogate brother throughout much of the story. Nym even becomes strong enough to save Shadow from dying during the big climax of the story. She couldn't save one brother, but she'd be damned if she let another die.
I do love Lyn, a lot more than I expected to when I first created him. I wanted someone Nym could love so much it would nearly destroy her to lose, and you kinda gotta put a lot of love into a character whose loss is supposed to hurt. I hope you all like his reference sheet, and these story tidbits!
