Description A wild fire burning in the mountains of Northern California.  The King Fire near Pollock Pines, west of Lake Tahoe.

Wild Fire burningOn Saturday September 13, 2014 a small fire was intentionally set in the pine forested Sierra Nevada mountains near the small town of Pollock Pines CA. The fire, on the first day was a measly 40 acres or so, but on Sunday the 14th the wind kicked in and the fire exploded in the tinder dry trees. California is in its 3rd year of drought and everything will burn. For fire maps and more information check out The YubaNet online paper http://yubanet.com/nevada/King.php – it has been a literal life saver for many people who were in the way of this monster.
My family does not live within the danger zone but several friends like :iconstephgabler: and her family do. They have lived with the threat of evacuation, having gotten the “voluntary” call on the 4th day of the fire.
The winds and dry conditions had the fire moving so rapidly that it moved over 15 miles in the course of ONE night! Thousands of people have been evacuated a

It is still going but today's containment amount is up to 92% - mostly mopping up doing on now and finding the stands within the lines that are still smoldering...the personnel is down to 3100 from the peak of over 8000!  We had almost 3" of rain fall over the fire area over the last few days which helped considerably with getting a handle on it...  thanks for viewing

Brrr!  I've seen way too many of those smoke clouds around here the last few years!  What disturbs me about this fire is that it was arson.    Some folks are just fragging fire bugs!  An appropriate punishment would be the total reseeding of the area burned--by hand.

Indeed!  You know it is bad when it still smells like smoke and there's been a day of rain...

It will smell like smoke for a while. Last year I had the big fire storm down here in Tuolumne County. We were smelling the smoke from that fire into November. I hope that today's weather helped your fire out. It is nice when the rain helps clean the smoke off the trees and freshens the air.

Tonight's report has the fire at 85% containment While this fire was huge for here (and the 2nd large one in my county this summer) - it was tiny compared to the Rim fire ...and yes the smell is still there but much better!  We're hoping that this early season rain helps get some regrowth going before the "real" rains start...

I get the impression from several of these that you were able to get fairly close? I also have to imagine that there is a limit to how close they would Let you get.

I think at the absolute closest we were maybe half a mile away...a good camera/tripod and a 300mm zoom helped  The night shots were taken across a canyon, and similar with most of the landscape ones.  Yes, many roads were (and still are) closed to the public...while watching during the day we were standing with a crowd of fire personnel - I'm sure they would have kicked us out if things had shifted AT all... I've got a couple shots of the helicopters flying right over us - dripping water on the lens

It did.  We also thought it looked like a volcano...it was caused by a major flare up; those towering pillars of smoke have dominated the horizon for way too long!

Sorry, to hear that. Goes with the territory I suppose but a lack of a rain in CA sure doesn't help.

kayaksailor In reply to Merhlin [2014-09-25 21:42:14 +0000 UTC]

that is very true...it is what made this one so explosive - that and it was burning in an area that hasn't burned in over 100 years!
