Today's doodle, coming in late (I had work to do... still finishing one last project!) is Zapdos, another of the legendary bird pokemon.Zapdos, while interesting, is a pretty bad design as far as action goes, so I had a challenge pushing him into my style. I based the general body type and posing on humming birds, but at the same time I didn't want to go realistic and wanted this to resemble the original style, too.
Honestly, even the official animation have NO CLUE how to animate this weird bird creature that's all spikes.

He was always my least favorite bird for the reason you described, even when I was too young to understand stuff. The best pokemon look like you could feel them if they were in the room with you, like you could reach out and pet them and say "yes, that's about right". This one just felt like random pointy shapes, and it didn't translate well to 3D.

Love it! I agree with Leundra- totally looks like he's wearing a mask, but it definitely works. : )
I especially love the feather lines here- that curly line on the wing helps break up how pointy he is overall. Zapdos has always been my favorite of the legendary birds, but you're right, his design is pretty awkward and looked clunky in the animated series.
