Ahw, that poor little guy. Sternchen need to help him!
She huffed and sniffed at him. After that she poked at him with her nose to show him that she just need the way to go.
➤ Agree to help the child
A pang of sympathy leads you to step closer to the poor child, hoping that your presence will be a comfort in this strange village. The child reaches up and fondly pets your muzzle, before stepping back a few paces. His tears immediately stop flowing and he gives you a cheeky wink, much to your confusion.
The boy begins to emit a golden glow, and soon his entire body is enveloped in light. You blink, and find yourself face to face with Nagruk. The spirit towers over you in the form of a white tokota with a magnificent crown of antlers.
"Fortune favours the prepared, but it also rewards the kind, if I have anything to say about it" he laughs. The village suddenly feels a little brighter. Nagruk smiles warmly at you, “I knew you’d find me! May I have a word?"
You’re a bit taken aback by his sudden appearance, but you find yourself smiling in return.
You sit down and allow the spirit to speak, ready to finally get some answers as to why you’re on this journey to begin with.
“Now, I bet you’re wondering what all this lantern fuss is about? Nasty business. You’re lucky you found me before Sivoganik found you. I trust you’ve heard about old rumbly guts, the Devourer ? Every so often he gets it into his head that if he consumes enough poor souls, he’ll be able to overthrow the rest of us. But only Sikrinerk can herd those poor souls to Aippaq. That lantern you carry," he nods towards the glowing lantern, “it will allow you to capture a special soul, one that is adept at eluding even Sikrinerk. You see, some souls are... less than ready.. to move on from this world, but they’re drawn to living tokotas such as yourself. There is one trapped here in Iluq, I need your help to capture it and bring it to Sikrinerk so it can find peace. Will you help me?"
You feel so warm and confident in Nagruk’s presence that you can hardly bring yourself to say no.
“Then the game is afoot," Nagruk says cheekily, winking at you, “Follow me!"
You run with Nagruk through Iluq forest. Being in his presence infuses you with strength and confidence. Your paws move with unnatural speed, but you are confident in every footfall, avoiding obstacles with ease. You fly over steep drops and around trees as if you were a spirit yourself. Even the canopy seems to part for you and the antlered spirit - the misty ground is lit with the golden sunbeams that now bathe the forest in light. You run for what feels like hours, but you never tire. When you reach the center of the forest, Nagruk halts. You follow his gaze to a clearing, where a dark shape lays curled up on a boulder.
“This is your hunt now," Nagruk whispers, “Good fortune to you."
You step carefully forward, and the spirit awakes and rises from the boulder. Its smokey, floating form is indistinct, but you can make out the shape of paws, ears, and two large eyes regarding you curiously. With a little coaxing, the spirit grows bold enough to draw closer. It swoops through the air around you, taking a good look at you from every angle. The lantern catches it’s eye, and with a small squeak, it floats forward to touch it with its nose. With a flash of bright light, the spirit is drawn into the lantern’s center. The inside of the lantern still glows with light, but the spirit’s now tiny form is trapped behind the glass. Confused, the spirit swirls angrily inside, tiny paws probing the glass for an escape, but the magic of the lantern keeps it contained.
1 x Lonely Spirit has been added to your event inventory.
“Excellent show," Nagruk remarks, trotting to your side, “It must have really taken to you, usually they aren’t so easy to approach. You know what to do next - find Sikrinerk. A word of caution young one - though Meelanik may tempt you, you must resist. Good fortune to you!"
The spirit of the hunt gives you one final wink, before his body gently fades from view, leaving only a few dust motes dancing in the sunbeams. This time however, you aren’t completely alone - the quiet of the forest is broken now and then by the tapping of the spirit on the glass of your lantern...
