Description This is what I do when I'm bored. I've always had an interest in video game development, so I've played a lot of games. However, now-a-days it is very rare that I come across a game title that truly immerses me. The overall experience of a lot of modern games is bland and forgettable. I have played many good games, and listened to what people like in video games. Video games are an art form, possibilities are endless. Yet so many want to be like the other guy, living in other's shadows, leaving us with over the top shooters and a bunch of Call of Duty clones. It's okay to use elements from other games, but you gotta be yourself. People want new gaming experiences, not the same crap over and over again (disregarding the mindless masses).

If I ever become a video game developer, I'd like to try not to be what the world wants me to be, and treat video games like the art form they really are, and maintain individuality. Aurora would be an action/adventure/RPG game. A hack and slash game style similar to Devil May Cry or Kingdom Hearts, mixed with parkour and climbing mechanics seen in Assassin's Creed and Uncharted. The environment would be interconnected, open yet limited like seen in Dark Souls and Metroid Prime, and would give the sense of misdirection or conveyance to which the players need to use their heads to figure out where to go. The game would nudge you in the right direction when you need it, but the game is in your hands. Everything you do is part of the experience. It would reward you for completing a challenge, and it would force you to use what you learned and what you've applied to the game to move forward.

I would have it focused mainly on the game play, telling the story through the player's experience rather than taking control away from the player with an overabundance of cut scenes or quick time events. It will teach the player how to play the game through the game itself, rather than holding the player's hand through the game. I'd want the game to be a long and challenging, yet at the same time fun. I want there to be a sense of satisfaction when you beat a tough boss, or when you figure out a puzzle all by yourself. There needs to be a driving force, something that'd keep the player playing the game and their would be plenty of content to discover.

Of course, if allowed, their would be plenty of things that hint towards the Sonic games since Aurora does technically exist in the Sonic Universe. Small things of course. Rings would act as the game's currency, your party will consist of 3 characters the player can switch to at any time (Heroes), and things like Extreme Gear and GUN will be present. Also, I'm aiming for rated T. Darker than most Sonic games, but still retains a cartoony look and attitude. Minor blood and suggestive themes wouldn't hurt anyone either.

Anyways, I babbling now. Some peeps have been curious what I'd choose to make if I could make Aurora a video game, so I thought I'd share a bit. Now the question is... would you play it?

Wow, nice job on this mock Game Box art. I read over your idea for an "Aurora" game, and I am totally in love with it.

I like your description of how the game would be like. It would be awesome if SEGA actually made a Sonic game like this, or if perhaps one of those Sonic Fan-Game creators, like the ones seen at SAGE (Sonic Amatuer Game Expo) were to make this. The ones at SAGE have made some pretty impressive fan-games too, so it could possibly be done.
I like how it has mechanics similar to KH and Metroid too! Though I'd prefer it without blood myself, but it can still have guns and such. I could imagine a better title being something like "Sonic Aurora" or "Sonic: Planet Aurora." Maybe you could still include those Sonic-style physics such as the running around large loops or speed-based puzzles that the series is well known for.

I could imagine there being parts where you'd explore the ruins to find an entrance to another area, or discover treasure or other helpful items. Most of the ruins would be more of optional places to explore and find items that are not truly necessary, but are certainly helpful (like items such as the Energy and Missile Tanks in Metroid), though they'd be dangerous and finding them can be tough. Other times, you could also find a shortcut or separate path to another area through exploring the ruins. Perhaps some missions and/or side quests would have you looking for something in there too.
Also, I could imagine since the Guardian Units of Nations would be present, you could recruit some of them as allies to help you, sort of like in Fallout or something, and perhaps you could also customize the loadout of your recruited teammates. Maybe there could be some Vehicle-Riding parts, where you pilot a G.U.N. vehicle or mecha and use it as a means of transport.

Also, what type of characters would appear as the enemies and bosses? Would they be ravenous Aurora inhabitants or active Mass-Produced Auroran Robots, or what? I'd picture Dharma would appear as a major boss fight as one, but I could be wrong.

I'd also love to see Eggman and his bots appear in this. He doesn't have to be the primary antagonist, but he could be like a secondary foe to the main threat who would be encountered at some parts. Sort of like the role that the Bonnes played in Megaman Legends (the Bonnes were also sort of a secondary foe like this).

I could also think of good boss fight ideas for this. I usually love thinking of good and creative ideas for boss battles, and maybe you'd like to hear some of mine?

Honestly, it would be better if Sega allowed me to develop and publish it. The reason being, Sega would want full control over the project and could make any change they'd want, and I've always questioned the writers behind Sonic games, and I know if Sega were to make it, the image I have for the game would be lost forever. If not, I would go ahead and make it as a free to play fan made game on for PC's only.Β

Blood wont be a big thing in it. It would be so minor, that it's hardly noticeable. However, I don't want if to be a kidy game. I want something along the boarder similar to Jak 2. There will be suggestive sexual themes, minor blood, use of tobacco and alcohol. Point being that this game has a rather dark story, and to make it work, I want the characters to match. It wouldn't be called a "Sonic" because this game will have a completely new cast of characters, completely new story, and a completely new threat. Also since the game is much different than a typical Sonic game, people would be thrown off by the fact that it's a Sonic title but Sonic isn't even in it, let alone the game play. Lance is a new character with his own story and own way to play. The game would have some speedy bits as Lance would be able to sprint, doubling his speed and granting him the ability to run up walls and hop over obstacles, like Assassin's Creed parkour physics.

You're right about the ruins too. The surface areas will be connected by underground ruins, which will make traveling between each area faster, with also a chance at new loot if the player chooses to explore deeper into the ruins. Of course, they would be optional, but there would be plenty of new content waiting for the player down below.

The GUN will actually be enemies at a certain point in the game. They will give Lance money for collecting bounties and act like police in town areas, but they will be more like the Krimzon Guard from Jak 2. You wont be able to recruit GUN allies, however, you can recruit other bounty hunters that can replace a party member for certain missions, and some GUN vehicles can be used in some areas, like the jeep, hovercraft, and glider as well as other "events" that allow you to ride extreme gear, motor cycles, airships etc ect. You wont be able to customize loadouts par say, but each character including yourself can be leveled up and granted new abilities and skills and upgraded weapons. But each character will be unique and play differently, with their own skills and their own unique weapons.

There will be quiet a variety of enemies and bosses. Each area will have its own set of creatures that fit the environment, GUN troops and robots, Insurrectionists and their robots (rebels basically fighting against GUN), Northsage Elites and their robots (royal knight-like soldiers), and of course Auroran Robots that will be found mainly in the ruins. There will be multiple Dharma robots at appear in different area's. Not necessarily boss battles, but closely to sub-boss status.

I have considered making Eggman have somewhat of a presence, but not a serious role. He wont have a serious threat, let alone be a serious part in the story. Hell, the player would never actually see him, but his robots are around. But I may scrap that idea.

I'm always open to new ideas

Wow, interesting. I didn't really think that, but perhaps SEGA would do that sort of thing. However, some of the game designers at SAGE have made some pretty darn impressive Sonic Fan-Games. I bet this would be possible using an engine like Unity 3D or something similar.

I suppose if it isn't that big of a thing in it, the blood and tobacco and such won't be too much. And seeing that sort of speed stuff used for Parkour would be interesting. I've never played Assassin's Creed, but the way you describe it reminds me of Tomb Raider, so this should be interesting! Not to mention the amount of content there would be there. So no different loadouts, but the leveling up and such instead? Hmm, sounds interesting, but depends how it will be implemented.

I wasn't sure whether G.U.N. would be on your side or not, it's hard to tell with them. I guess something happens and they think you're the enemy for some reason. I'd love to see what the Insurrectionists and Northsage Elites are like, that could help me imagine what enemies and boss fights for them would be like. I could picture each of them having a different theme to each of their's and the kinds you'd expect to encounter differ for each one. Like Eggman's are mostly all-around futuristic, G.U.N. are more militaristic-futuristic with more emphasis on bullet and missile-type weapons, etc.

And Extreme Gear would be cool to pilot. Maybe at certain parts, you could pilot Samsara in his Manual Operation Mode. I didn't know that there's more than one "Dharma" but I guess those ones would be like a really big enemy then.

I could tell you my ideas for boss fights, but they are rather long and extensive, although I doubt you'd mind that. When I have time, I will send you a note on some ideas I have had.

I would so play this~ <333 Oh gosh it sounds amazing ;u;

I myself have thought of games to make- IF I were to be a video game designer/producer (which will never happen). I always loved the Legend of Zelda games, as well as the older Sonic games, where everything was made into a puzzle to solve. The idea of making it an RPG grabs my attention too, since those happen to be one of my favorite kind of games~ Creating your very own character, to change as the world changes around you? The possibilities are endless.Β

And of course, I would play this game just so I could kick some major GUN ass~ Β

I was never a fan of handhelds. If I want to play a video game, it's gonna be in my house on the couch. Living on my own, I'm usually doing something important and have no time to use handhelds. Maybe if I was a kid or had less responsibilities and more free time, I'd use handhelds on the go. So no PSP or Nintendo DS ports. Home consoles only.Β

It would be focused around a single player experience, with a 4-6 (4 player free for all, or 3 on 3 team battles) online multiplayer. With the game play style, huge numbers of players wouldn't work at all.

And no dlc. All content will be available to everyone. If there is gonna be dlc, it will be more of an expansion pack with hours of new content.

Being based around a single player experience, the game does not require you to be online. Other than patches and updates of course.

I'm not sure if cross console gaming will take off in the future. I really hope it does. I'd love for Playstation players to be able to play with their friends who only own Xbox's.

Describe what you mean by blend...Β

However I wonder whether anybody holds the rights to the general... whatchamacallit... "look" of a Mobian character. In case they would have to approve or something. I hope nobody does. Should you ever change your mind and replace the elements of Sonic world (the GUN and Extreme Gear) with an original conept of yours, you should be probably free of any SegaΒ lawsuit, despite dropping hints.

LancerWolf13 In reply to calculusmaster [2013-10-02 18:41:02 +0000 UTC]

That's all there is to really worry about. Other than the fact that the characters are Mobian, the story and universe I made is solid. If I need to, I can replace GUN with another fictional government of my own, and replace the Extreme gear with simply just hoverboards.

This caught my attention straight away in my messages. The slight use of blue, amber and red embedded with the dull backdrop really catches the eye in more ways than one, and mixes the darker theme with the cartoony theme Sonic has quite well. Just by looking at this, I definitely would want to play it, so you've done your job excellently designing the cover And by the way you've described it, it sounds like it could be a pretty popular and badass game by giving almost total control up to the player. Really a job well done~ c:
