Description EXPERIMENTA is my new comic strip experiment. Basically an ongoing comic without any idea or story. I will let it grow organically page by page. no limit whatsoever. only the format and perhaps colour palette will be the same. Drawn on half an A4 page.

jangojim is my pseudonym as an artist.

Sounds like a cool project-- I love the color palette here, and also in your other works-- it's very striking. Flat colors forever

haha yeah ! I actually did a lot more pages, but still haven't coloured them. I should maybe do that...
thanks for the support man

you mean Jangojim ? that's my proud second name, thanks !
aww, great to hear that man. I finished part 1 of the experiment( yeah, I call it part 1 ), some 12 finished pages, but still haven't found the time to scan them and colour them. but I might do that sooner now

yowassup In reply to laresistance [2010-04-29 00:43:44 +0000 UTC]

I totally understand about finding the time to scan and color... drawing can be SO much fun, and scanning and coloring... it's not like they are not fun, they are just not near as fun as drawing for me... so if i have limited time, I'd rather spend it on drawing more instead of scanning!!

what i need is an "intern" who would scan and color stuff for me... but since this is a hobby for me, i suppose it would be mighty hard to find an intern!!

laresistance In reply to yowassup [2010-04-29 12:22:45 +0000 UTC]

yep, true ! I'm still looking for a way to speed up the scanning and colouring process. upgrades can be made
haha, an intern for a hobby is great idea, but yeah, it's all part of the deal I guess
and I do like picking my own colours and stuff

yowassup In reply to laresistance [2010-04-30 02:36:35 +0000 UTC]

Although, really, if it was some twelve year old kid who knew nothing about scanning or photoshop, then that would actually be kind of cool for the kid. You could call it "photoshop lessons" and have kids from the neighborhood come over. That would even be the kind of thing some parents would "pay" for, but you could teach them for free in return for them scanning your entire collection of doodles!!

But yeah, picking your own colors... yeah... me too. Though, you could set up a limited palette of colors you like to use and see what happens when the kids go to work with that.

OR, you could do what a friend of mine does. He has his wife lay down his flat color areas, and then he goes back in and uses the flats as areas to click and fill, replacing them with the colors he wants to use.

I like your thinking , GREAT IDEA ! basically that's how vice magazine works. nah, just kidding. but they do use a lot of free interns.

working together is probably a pretty good idea, or getting me a clone slave. gotta remember that

yowassup In reply to laresistance [2010-05-03 12:13:11 +0000 UTC]

just make sure the government never finds out, or they'd be after your fanny for some sort of tax payment on all the work your clone does!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

laresistance In reply to yowassup [2010-05-08 13:48:59 +0000 UTC]

yeah probably, and I'm not slick or well-informed enough to fool the government

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

yowassup In reply to laresistance [2010-05-09 12:04:06 +0000 UTC]

I don't think it is all that hard if

(1) you are just poor enough to be below the radar but not poor enough to be considered possible thief or swindler

(2) you never really tell the government anything except stuff that keeps you out of trouble (never lie, just don't hand in any forms that would make them look you over)

(3) you aren't doing anything dangerous to others or easily noticeable, like streaking naked through the park or spending fake money

(4) you are living in your own home country

Still, even if you fulfill all of these conditions, there is always the chance that the government will stumble over your evil cloning operations, so it is best to just live a life of sorrow and toil and tears instead of opting for the easy but risky life of crime or clone related tax evasion.

Does any of this make any sense?

Is this conversation now being monitored by some agent against terrorism? Or are there just too many freaky conversations on da for them to even take notice?

laresistance In reply to yowassup [2010-05-09 14:55:04 +0000 UTC]

this makes a lot of sense, thanks for the tips man ! I'm definitely taking them up in my personal notebook: "how to fool the government and how to tapdance". why not combine two great things, I thought

I always thought it was easier when you're not in your homecountry. if something goes wrong, you just get the fuck out

yeah, we are probably being tracked by google and agents now, though, since we mentioned fooling the government. but since there is no proof yet, I bet we're still safe behind our screens. or am I getting paranoid...( automatic programs check all of the internet for certain word use and I bet they get checked. I'll make it easier for them to see if it works: terrorism, al-qaeda, hitler, propaganda, nazi, communist, top secret, britney spears. that last one definitely gets me on a watchlist )

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

yowassup In reply to laresistance [2010-05-10 08:00:36 +0000 UTC]

Ouch. Now the Britney Spears Department is hot on our tails. All of our letters will reach the recipients opened and in special plastic bags (this actually happened repeatedly to someone I knew once). Eventually they will get angry with us when they don't get to see any weird nude photos or anything, and in spite they will hack our systems to make downloading stuff take longer. But we will fight back by being so lazy that we don't care how long it takes!!

I think it might be easier to get caught doing stuff in a foreign country because the government and cops and stuff are always casting a watchful eye on foreigners (which I am), and also there is generally more paperwork to be filled out on a more regular basis when you live abroad, so more chances to get "caught" doing something shady. Of course, you can probably just escape to your own country if stuff goes wrong, but if you have a wife and kid and career in that foreign country, like me, that would suck severely. The only real choice would be to stay and take whatever punishment they decide on.

My only real fear is that I will mess up on some form at some point, and through an honest stupid mistake, I will wind up owing the government some outragous sum of money at one point, and they will let the problem go on for years to rack up interest or something, and eventually they will put the clamp on me and my whole life will become a sad gray existence living just to pay them back...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

laresistance In reply to yowassup [2010-06-05 22:36:31 +0000 UTC]

indeed we will not give up ! the plastic bag thing is creepy ! in which country did that happen ?

good point on the foreigners. But in Belgium it doesn't apply anymore. in my city there are now 40% people of foreign origin ( causes a deal of problems too of course ) and Belgium isn't exactly a country where you should fear the government. We don't have FBI or CIA . there's federal police, but you hardly hear anything about them. but yes, with a wife and kid there's no cool talk like mine anymore. sheesh, even agents have to see that. that's why james bond never has long term relationships.

oo, the form-fear is something I have as well ! you hear those stories from time to time and since I'm kinda lazy and messy in paperwork I fear it could be the case one day. that would definitely suck. but then again, I'll never be rich enough to get worried on that. if you don't have a lot, you can't lose a lot. but I'll probably talk different when I have a family

I like this. So far it's a comic about making a comic, how very meta. Plus really creatively drawn, you could make paint drying fun!

you mean I should go painting ? someone else said that as wel..

thanks, man ! yeah, it's fun and free

Fievel-the-Mouse In reply to laresistance [2010-04-07 21:38:44 +0000 UTC]

i meant watching paint dry is boring as hell, but you'd make it fun. But yes, go painting.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

laresistance In reply to Fievel-the-Mouse [2010-04-08 01:05:23 +0000 UTC]

hahaha, if I have paint drying I don't keep watching it, I go do something else in the meantime. that's like putting clothes in the washing machine and watch them being washed .

thx for the confidence, though. I might get me fingers dirty again these days

Fievel-the-Mouse In reply to laresistance [2010-04-09 08:43:58 +0000 UTC]

yes do it! i really wanna do some paint, pencil stuff instead of always photoshop

laresistance In reply to Fievel-the-Mouse [2010-04-09 12:18:51 +0000 UTC]

I'm kinda getting tired of photoshop colours as well. it delivers totally cool stuff, but I also like it when something is cool in its original state and you can put it in an expo or something

Fievel-the-Mouse In reply to laresistance [2010-04-09 19:56:34 +0000 UTC]

So true, so true. I only just taught myself o use photoshop though, I'd have to teach myself all these new mediums! Actually, that sounds like fun, excuse me!

laresistance In reply to Fievel-the-Mouse [2010-04-10 08:11:40 +0000 UTC]

but you are a fast learner ! I taught it myself for 1,5 years now and see what you can do with it. it's all about experimenting.

Man, I LOVE this experiment! And this coloring is blowing my mind.

Also, I 2nd Mr. Bluebird's recommendation of the Lynda Barry book, it's a great guide to creative cartooning.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

laresistance In reply to oh-the-humanatee [2010-04-04 19:48:35 +0000 UTC]

thanks so much, man ! I'm not sure yet where it is taking me and if it isn't a waste of time.
I've already drawn 10 pages now, I feel it gives me a certain flow of working, a certain freedom.
but I should really focus on a good solid story actually. many thanks for the support, colouring is an experiment as well.
fast applied easy colours, faults included

I think I might wanna check out that Lynda Barry book, yep. like I said to Mr Bluebird, I picked up the book before but visually it didn't appeal that much to me somehow then. but looking at it again online has wettened my appetite. it looks so creative

Have you ever heard of "what it is" by Lynda Barry?
I think you'd like it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

laresistance In reply to MarioGraciotti [2010-04-04 19:44:06 +0000 UTC]

already drawn 10 pages , but still have to slightly edit them ( colour etc )
it's a fun experiment. it's a bit lazy though. I should come up with a proper scenario actually, but it's a good exercise for me

I thought I never heard of Lynda Barry, but I actually picked up the book when I was in New York last year. The style did not immediately appeal to me, but when looking at it again now it looks like it's stacked with fun ideas and a fun read. got an eisner award too apparently. so I might check it out. thanks !

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MarioGraciotti In reply to laresistance [2010-04-06 21:39:47 +0000 UTC]

it's only lazy if you never have and never will make a plot-driven cartoon. If that's not the case, then I'd consider it a fun and promising experiment.

The book really is one of a kind. It's hard to describe what's it about or what genre it fits into. Which is another way of saying that it's awesome

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

laresistance In reply to MarioGraciotti [2010-04-07 16:43:23 +0000 UTC]

yeah, good point. I do keep postponing a serious publication. there's a lot of pressure to make it good. it also needs time, but I seriously need to get my ass moving towards that.

making something that is hard to define is the best. fuck genres
