Description
The Soul Eater Protagonists: *chattering*
The Director: OK We're rolling in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
Maka: Hello fellow moviegoers I'm Maka Albarn.
Soul: I'm Soul Evans.
Kid: I'm Death the Kid.
Liz and Patty: We're Liz and Patty.
Black Star: I'm the Amazing Black Star.
TsuBaki: I'm TsuBaki.
Blair (In cat form): And I'm Blair. The cat with magical powers.
Maka: Before we begin our review, let's talk about a famed director named Henry Selick. Henry Selick is best known as the long time friend of fellow famed director Tim Burton along with being the one behind 1993's The Nightmare before Christmas, Originally based on a poem by Burton who was unable to direct the film himself due to directing Batman Returns at the time, 1996's James and the Giant Peach based off the Roald Dahl book of the same name, and the movie adaptation of the Neil Gaiman novel Coraline released 1 year after our anime was made.
Soul: However there is one movie that some people, director included, seem to forget and skipped. We're talking about 2001's Monkeybone.
TsuBaki: Monkeybone is a live action/stop motion hybrid comedy released 3 years before our manga was created and it stars Brendan Fraser fresh from 1999's The Mummy who plays a repressed cartoonist who met an untimely fate driving home with his girlfriend Julie who is played by Bridget Fonda from 1994's It Could Happen To You.
Soul: Now that we talked to you about what the movie is about let's view this film.
Kid: *Hands Soul the DVD*
Soul: *Takes the DVD and sees it* Boy This movie doesn't try to hide what it's about. *Puts it in*
Liz: I sense something horrid this way comes.
Maka: We open to the intro which depicts our unseen star making a proposal gift for Julie.
Kid: Look how he manage to keep his symmetry while drawing with his left hand. It's the most beautiful display of symmetry I even seen.
Liz: *Rolls her eyes in annoyance at her meister's obsession with symmetry*
Soul: After the intro is over, we are then cut to a live action audience who are about to watch a pilot for a cartoon series called Monkeybone entitled "Show Me the Monkey."
Tsubaki: The pilot depicts a guy named Stanley who is talking with his therapist about how he developed a crush on his teacher Miss Hudlap back in the 3rd grade.
Patty: It was because he was turned on by her arm flaps.
Liz: I wish we were making this up.
Maka: Which led him to his first erection.
Liz: It's been five minutes in and it's already trying too hard.
Soul: But this was no ordinary erection.
Patty: It's Monkeybone!!!
Liz: Who then makes out with the teacher. This is more worst when that mummy licked me.
TsuBaki: After Stanley Leaves the office, his therapist proceeds to laugh behind his back and that's it.
Liz: But despite what we just saw, it seem to be a hit.
Maka: Here we are properly introduced to the man behind the monkey named Stu Miley.
Patty: As in smiley.
Soul: During the after party, Stu's friend Herb, AKA Dave Foley From Kids in the Hall and A Bug's life, quickly became his manager and has already had set up meetings to help promote the show with merchandising, starting with the local toy company BaZoom Toys.
Liz: Wait just a minute! Aren't we forgetting what we just saw? Clearly what we saw is the kind of stuff parents don't want their kids to be exposed to. So why are they making toys featuring a character that's basically his creator's erection?
Patty: Just be glad that Stu only cares about proposing to Julie than that.
Blair: While heading to his car Stu discovers that Herb filled his car up with prototypes of the toys from before. And as he tries to back up and leave the studio he accidentally inflates a Monkeybone inflatable which caused him and Julie to back up out of control till they crash.
Patty: BBBBBBOOOMMMMM! HAHAHAHA!!! Sorry.
Liz: Then we see Stu has fallen into a coma as Julie, who is not despite being in the same car with him, is now crying over him as his body gets sucked into the stretcher a la Trainspotting as he soon finds himself on a roller coaster taking him to a weird beyond belief place called Down Town.
Patty: Which is where comatose people like Stu have oodles of fun due to its resemblance to a fun carnival.
Liz: Define fun.
Soul: After a run in with some stop motion roadkill while getting his psychological baggage, Stu makes his way thru this surreal environment encountering the residents who resemble Barney the Dinosaur characters on LSD where he make his way to the Coma bar where he finds that he is not alone as he sees other people in the same dilemma as he is.
TsuBaki: After the bar tending minotaur explains to Stu that Down Town is the land of nightmares and prior to the movie Stu has provided all the nightmares they needed to be entertained, he soon encounters his creation Monkeybone, who is voiced by The Big LeBowski's John Turturro.
Liz: Who makes his first impression coming out of the organ that's being played by that elephant god and begin juggling eyeballs. Seriously. After doing his best Marilyn Monroe impression after inflating his ears and uses them as... breasts. Yes.
Patty: We cut back to the Real World and are introduced to Stu's older sister Kimmy played by Megan Maulally from Will and Grace who is told by the doctor if Stu doesn't wake up in three months, the plug is gonna be pulled on him. Back home Julie and her friend discovered the proposal that Stu was gonna show Julie.
Movie: *Plays the scene where they discovered Stu's first drawing and Julie explains how Stu went to cartoons.*
Liz: And what we just saw proves that both sides are complete nightmares.
Patty: Why is that Big Sis?
Liz: Simple. After seeing Monkeybone for the first time in the film, excluding the pilot from the film's start, We can instantly describe his entire character as a crude, perverted, obnoxious little bug. And I hope you people love doing number 3 jokes because this orange abomination is the antro personification of said jokes.
Maka: OK. Well back on topic. Back in Down Town....
Blair: We are now introduced to Miss Kitty after Monkeybone takes one too many jabs at his creator.
Soul: Isn't that Paige Matthews from Charmed?
Blair: Yes. This is Rose McGowan.
Soul: She makes one hot pussy.
Blair: But *changes to human form and is wearing her casual outfit* I'm hotter.
Maka: Are you done? Good. Back on topic, Stu tells Kitty about Julie and how he feels that he'l never see her again. But Kitty thinks otherwise and gives Stu some hope.
Blair: Along with trying to give him something else.
Maka: *Raises book in anger*
Blair: I'll be good.
Black Star: After the orange monkey takes a little dive in Kitty's dress and a chase scene. Stu discovers if he want to return to the Real World he needs to qualify for an exit pass. An exit pass is a ticket made of solid gold which is used to gain access to the Revive-O where a person sits down and waits for the hammer to drop and sends the person back into the Real World thru an Abe Lincoln head.
Liz: WTF?! The portal back to Reality is an Abe Lincoln head? That's just plain weird.
Patty: We got a laughing moon and sun. And that is treated as normal.
Liz: But that's different.
Soul: After when he thinks all hope is lost now, a stop motion Indian accented Egyptian messager gives Stu a package and an invite to a pajama party at Hypnos' Hideaway.
Liz: But that won't help him much because it's already been 3 months in the real world but Stu doesn't know that. And during the party at Hypnos' joint *Sees the Down Town residents and party guests dancing as Medusa sings Love is a Drug* Wow Henry Selick must have spend a lot of time putting so much weirdness in this movie in only one scene.
Tsubaki: As you already know from the first parts of the film, everyone in Down Town are entertained by the nightmares of the living and Stu discovers that 3 months has passed and the plug is gonna be pulled on him after seeing Julie's nightmare.
Liz: Which looks like a David Lynch film on meth.
Black Star: We are introduced to the God of Sleep himself Hypnos, AKA Giancarlo Esposito from 1989's Do the Right Thing.
Liz: After making out with a lost James and the Giant Peach bug.
Black Star: Who then advise Stu on cheating Death himself. And it's not Kid's father and it's a herself. Which we would get to. All Stu needs to do is go to the Land of Death and steal one exit pass right under Death's nose.
Maka: Back in the Real World, Julie is in a meeting with her friends from the Sleep Institute on how to wake Stu up.
Movie: *plays the scene where Julie shows the charts to her friends*
Maka: According to the charts, Stu is in an endless nightmare due to body being filled with a drug that they call nightmare juice. They plan to use this drug to scare Stu awake.
Liz: We are then cut to the Land of Death Where Stu and Monkeybone disguise as a reaper trying to get an exit pass from Death, who is played by Sister Act 1 and 2's Whoopi Goldberg. Why is that you may ask?
Patty: Because quirkiness goes great with everything!
Kid: Sadly their cover is blown and start to fight off the reapers while MB takes the exit pass. Death was pissed.
Stu in Movie: Well done!
Death's assistant in Movie: FIRE IN THE HOLE!!!!!
Monkeybone in Movie: Whose hole?
Death in Movie: *Her head explodes*
The Soul Eater Protagonists: OoO
Liz:
Black Star: After that whole scenario, Stu and Monkeybone runs to a trolley heading back to Down Town while Death's Assistant, played by Thomas Hayden Church, replaces Death's head after sending out a super reaper to attack the creator and his creation. Monkeybone fights it off and ends up falling down and never to been seen again.
Liz: It must be my birthday.
TsuBaki: But back in the Real World, Julie injects Stu's body with nightmare juice, which send him into his first drawing we saw earlier in the film.
Liz: *Is mortified beyond belief* WTF IS GOING ON??????!!!!!! CAN'T THIS GET ANY WORSE????!
Patty: Fortunately for Stu, Monkeybone is ok and rescues him, yay!
Liz: I had to ask. After what we just saw was thankfully never brought up again. We know what that is, we're just gonna let you see this Nostalgia critic clip.
Chester A. Bum in Clip: A BIG LIPPED ALLIGATOR MOMENT! *end clip*
Kid: After the duo returned to Down Town, Monkeybone reveals that he is fed up with being just a Figment and has already made a deal with Hypnos to steal his creator's body while Stu is send to the dungeon.
Liz: Didn't they just decided to rip off Cool World at this point? This whole movie is a Cool World rip off. Down to having a surreal out of control looking world.
Patty: But it uses a body snatching plot.
Liz: Still. Oh and Stu's sister is absent for the rest of the film and thus we have to deal with Fraser playing a monkey in a man's body. I'm surprised the only person knows that Stu is really in Down Town is Buster and he's really a dog. Back in Down Town, Stu is in the dungeon along with, I'm not joking, Stephen King, Edgar Allen Poe, Jack the Ripper, Attila the Hun, and others. Seriously? You could have choose other writers but instead you gave us Jack the Ripper?! Would it kill you put something in this movie that makes sense?!
Patty: But this is a Henry Selick movie, it's not suppose to make sense.
Kid: Are you done yet?!
Liz: Yes I'm cool.
Blair: Hypnos explains to Stu the reason Monkeybone stole his body is that he can give all of Down Town brand new nightmares and that Julie made some fresh new nightmare juice. So after Hypnos reminds Monkeybone the reason why he stole Stu's body in the first place, Monkeybone heads to the sleep lab where Julie works at...
Liz: Which leads to this scene.
*It cuts to Monkeybone in Stu's body making out with the test ape so he can take the nightmare juice*
Liz: At least he didn't bang it.
Soul: After Stu steals the nightmare juice and switches it for a container filled with grape kool aid, he proceeds to fill some Monkeybone toys that fart when you pull out its thumb after some meetings dealing with merchandising and tests it on Buster.
Liz: Which results in this scene. You have been warned.
*Cuts to the scene where Buster is infected by the nightmare juice*
Liz: *quickly pauses it* I'm gonna need a moment.
The others: *follows as well*
*Cuts to card that says "Please Stand By."*
Crona: *Enters and wonders where is everybody til Ragnarok tells Crona to keep the review going* OK! Well um.. I don't really..
Ragnarok: Let me help you out! Kitty steals the key to the cell...
Crona: So Stu can escape and stop Monkeybone....
Soul: *Comes back with the others* All right Crona we can take it from here.
Crona: OK. Sure.
Soul: Good. We love to have you around...
Liz: But Ragnarok is an ass!
*As soon as Crona leaves, they found out that Crona has stopped at the part where Kitty devours the mouse guard*
Liz: CRONA COME BACK!! WE NEED YOU!!!!!!
TsuBaki: After Stu tells Death about Monkeybone's plan she agrees to help stop him by putting him in a new body after admitting to be a big fan of his comic strip.
*Cuts to the scene where Death admitting she likes Stu's strip*
Soul: She kicks Stu into the air where he is send into the body of a organ donor gymnast with a broken neck and was in the middle of getting his organs removes played by Saturday Night Live's Chris Kattan.
Liz: Boy as we don't have enough gross out humor already. It makes me wish Prof. Stein use the same technique on this guy like did to Sid.
Black Star: After losing the doctors, Stu heads straight to his house to find out Monkeybone is at a charity event after taping a ruler to his head to keep the neck straight and has to get there really fast.
TsuBaki: At the party, Herb gets infected with the nightmare juice after trying out the toxic monkey toy which results him to have a nightmare that his clothes are alive and proceeds to take them off before they kill him.
Liz: Because his actor is from a show that loves this brand of humor.
Stu!Monkeybone in Movie: Ladies and gentlemen, forget about the naked man with the purple face.
Liz: How can we not?
TsuBaki: Then Monkeybone proceeds to sing an ode to Julie.
Liz: AKA the scene that explains why Bridget Fonda stopped acting.
*Cuts to the scene where Monkeybone sings "Brickhouse".
Kid: This not that bad.
Black Star: Hey you're right.
Maka: After that scene, we see Stu gymnasting his way in the museum while being chased by the doctors.
Liz: Makes me wish Prof. Stein was here.
*Cuts to the scene where Stu tell Julie and everyone that he's the real Stu and that is Monkeybone in his body til the guard takes him away*
Kid: Julie goes to the real Stu and asks if it's really him.
*Cuts to Stu saying that he needed to come back to the Real World to give her his and Kimmy's grandma's ring*
Liz: We are now witnessing Chris Kattan's biggest dramatic moment ever in his career. Even if he is playing a long lost friend of Sid's being possessed by Brendan Fraser.
Maka: Julie now believe Stu and proceeds to stop Monkeybone from breaking the Stanley pinata containing the toxic dolls.
Organ Donor Stu in Movie: Back. In. THE PACK!!!!
Stu!Monkeybone: Eek! I can explain everything. I was tired of being a Figment. It's dirty lineal work, it's kind of like being being a pool boy. But at least pool boys have their own bodies. Don't I at least deserve a body?
Liz: OK, I admit this whole scenario is kind of funny.
Black Star: Sadly that fails as Monkeybone destroys the pinata and proceeds to escape while Stu and Julie following him.
Liz: AKA they just drop an important part of the plot, where the resolution can only be seen in the deleted scenes.
Blair: On top of the roof, Stu and Julie sees Monkeybone escaping by riding a Monkeybone balloon. Stu knows he must go after his rebellious creation.
OD Stu in Movie: I love you. *kisses Julie*
Liz: *vomits in her mouth* Look Julie, I don't give two craps that your lover's soul in there, you just kissed a corpse.
Black Star: During the fight between creator vs. creation with each hit Stu takes causing an organ to fall out of the corpse he is in only for the doctors to come and retrieve it, Monkeybone comes up with many ways to tee off his decomposing creator.
Patty: Til a cop comes and says that he might be able to take them down.
Liz: While the're very up in the air.
Cop in Movie: *shoots the bullet, which hits the butt of the balloon, causing it to deflate*
TsuBaki: After falling to the ground after the balloon deflates, Stu and Monkey resume their fight as they're falling back to Down Town, with the residents cheering on the fight.
Maka: Suddenly, a huge giant stone mecha starts rising out from under the Revive-O catches the falling pair and starts to reveal that the one operating it is Death.
Death in Movie: So, how was she?
Stu in Movie: She was beautiful. Even though I was decomposing at the time, at least I know that she loves me.
Monkeybone: Um excuse me Death, hehe, I hate to break up this little love fest but my little bladder is about to burst.
Death in Movie: *pulls a lever*
Monkeybone: BUT I REALLY GOT TO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kid: After Monkeybone is send back insides Stu's head where he belongs, Death proceeds to send Stu back into the Real World where he and Julie are reunited at last.
Liz: And if you're wondering what happen to Hypnos after Stu is send back, watch this deleted scene.
*Cuts to the deleted scene that shows what Death does to Hypnos*
Patty: So Stu and Julie proceed to have a happily ever after.
Liz: Which leads to this weirdness.
Herb in Movie: People. For the love of God. Take off your clothes. Take off your clothes!!! *Then it shifts the end credits while Liz turns it off after the whole people revealing be monkeys parts*
Soul: So there you have it folks, Regardless of Fox's meddling Monkeybone seems to be a decent film.
Maka: The animation was great and the cast was amazing.
Soul: The soundtrack was OK as well.
Kid: And without this film, Henry Selick would've gone and made Coraline.
Liz: Love it or hate it, I have to admit it does have its charm and the animation and visuals are cool.
Maka: Yes it does. So anyways we're are the stars of Soul Eater and see you next time.
Soul: You know this was fun.
END!
