Frost bit Hannah’s nose as she rode Missy (Barn name of Artemis) towards the start of the trial. The mare was a little stroppy today, shaking her head and snorting at any horse or rider that came into her eyesight. Hannah gave her withers a scratch, cooing gently to calm the fidgety horse. Once they set out, the mare would be fine again. It was the walking around that she was less good at. She wanted to stretch her legs, wanted her strides to eat up the ground. She would get plenty an opportunity.

They had done some eventing back at home, long courses with small obstacles, but this was different. It would be harder terrain, a more challenging track and slightly bigger jumps than they were entirely used to at shows. At their home turf, they had been jumping decent obstacles, but it was never the same as in a new place.

The warm-up arena was fairly busy, so Hannah got to work warming up Missy without colliding into her fellow competitors. The mare’s fiery attitude seemed to give others enough incentive to not come too close, though it was all bark and no bite. Missy had never actually tried fighting, kicking or biting at other horses- not while under saddle. The paddock could be a different story at times. Hannah was starting to recognize some other rider and horse pairs, though she was too new to feel confident to mingle. She had spent most of her free time in the stable with Missy, facetiming her mother. Hannah hoped that she would be able to tell her good news later after the ride.
She heard her named called, reined Missy in a little more, and headed to the starting line. The mist blew from their nostrils, mixing with the already formed mist.
