Description I found this little guy - well, maybe not THAT little - in the parking lot of my old job very late one night (or very early one morning, depending on your point of view). I found out he's a cecropia moth and that the big hairy antennae probably mean that he IS a he and not a she. I've never seen another one of these moths before or since.

Beautiful moth, i was fortunate enough to raise a bunch of its caterpillars last year, its caterpillars are BIG and take a long time to grow, and they EAT ALOT! XD It then spends 8 months in a cocoon and finally emerges as a adult in the spring, the adults only live 1-2 weeks!

How beautiful- and what a lucky catch! I believe their life span is only about a week...

Nice. I don't see very many colorful moths where I live. Most of them are the small white and grey kind. I did manage to find a luna moth once and another big brown one that I never found out what it was.

They are so beautiful. I found one dead as a little girl and my uncle had it mounted in a display case for me. I wonder if I still have it somewhere? ::goes off to rumage in the attic:: Oh, beautiful shot by the way.

AHA!!! So this is the culprit!
One of these things took a swing at my face when I was taking the trash out at work.
Nearly gave me a heart attack. The guys who work at the carwash across the street laughed at me when I screamed.....

His wingspan was probably around 8" or darn close. I'd never seen one before and haven't seen one since, although they're supposed to be relatively common.
