Because sometimes you can't help yourself with chakra...While Patsumi is charming nobles and having fun being pretty, someone has to do the dirty job. Mimiko is often that someone. Who doesn't love trudging in the waist-deep, smelly water?
I like drawing Mimiko in her jounin attire - it's much better suited for her fighting style than her 'standard' one. Also this is yet another attempt at drawing background - and I rather like the outcome, even if it's not very anime-like. Clip Studio Paint is a lot of fun to work with and the brushes are fantastic.

I know this is a Jounin picture of her, but just to be a little picky....
ANBU usually use very short swords, because long swords don't work well in close quarters and are slightly more noise making silent kills hard.
That said... I spotted the short sword at her hip ^_^

That said - I'm pretty sure that katana is quite a versatile weapon. And kenjutsu is Mimiko's go to instead of taijutsu when it comes to battling the enemy in close quarters - she suffered a serious arm injury which means she has some problems when it comes to simple hand-to-hand combat.
I know that ANBU use short swords for fighting - that's why Mimiko is also carrying a tanto. Because it's easier to stab someone with something shorter; also it's less steel to reflect the light when you need to be sneaky. But you not always have to be

I did combative sword fighting for 2 years... well less than two years. I know a thing or two about swords... I really like them
While the Katana is versatile it is still a long instrument, making it hard to turn it and arch it across an opponents throat in a small room. A small dagger like the one she has at her hip would be much better. A killing blow with any long weapon is only going to be 100% effective when you swing a full arch, usually meaning you have to step forward. This because if your opponent sees you coming they are likely to step away from you, reducing the damage done to them by your weapon.
This is why they teach a one step forward attack, and one step back in defence, technique in the sword schools/clubs. In a tournament a killing blow isn't qualified unless you took one step forward into your opponent in order to make it.

There was a moment when I wanted to try that out myself, but I wasn't brave enough to go against all the 'this is not appropriate for a girl' talk. Plus I probably would be able to find someone willing to teach me. So all I can do is rely on theory and my own imagination.
Well, Mimiko is too much of a professional to use a weapon when it's inadequate to the surroundings. So it's mostly tanto when she's inside. Katana is only for times when she has enough space to properly move with it. But considering this is Naruto's universe we don't always have to be completely accurate. Sometimes all we need is a bit drama and plain awesomeness. Even when it goes against the rules. Like i know this is probably wrong way to imagine things, because this is the wrong kind of sword, but I like to think about her fighting style as similar to the one witchers use.
On the side note I might have drawn it slightly too long here.

Don't read too much into what I said, I was just excited to see swords and so I shared that excitement.
Straight swords are easier to use but curved swords allow you to use more techniques and slash better.
the sabre is one of the best weapons ever made simply because it is has a good weight and slashes extremely well.
the samurai sword (katana) is famous for being sharp and hard to break, but for some reason they never implemented the curve.
two handed swords do more damage but require more effort
1 handed swords are faster but easier to deflect
personally I prefer one handed weapons but two handed weapons teach better technique. in battle I would like to have two 1 handed weapons in each hand because they suck at blocking but you could probably kill your enemy before they kill you.
you should totally try sword fighting, not fencing because that isn't real sword fighting. look up, 'combative sword fighting' which is the real deal. I bet you could find some trainers on YouTube. it will blow your mind
