Description Hachiko was born in Odate in Akita Prefecture, November 10 1923. He was an exemplary white male Akita. At the age of two months, was adopted by Hidesamuroh Ueno, a professor in the department of agriculture in Tokyo, which took him with him at his home in Shibuya. Every morning, Professor Ueno is directed to Shibuya station to go to work. His faithful dog always accompanied him and returned to the station when his master was part of the working day.

Unfortunately, May 21 1925, Ueno died of cardiac arrest while he was at university. Hachiko, like every day, he appeared at the station for the 3 pm (the time in which his boss usually arrived), but Professor Ueno had not yet returned. The dog waiting in vain for his arrival. Nevertheless, he returned to the station the next day and did so in the following days. Over time, the chief of Shibuya and the people who took the daily train began to notice him and tried to look after offering food and shelter.

With time, all the Japanese people came to know the story of Hachiko, so much so that many people just went to Shibuya to see and to be able to caress. Despite the passing years and his advancing age, which gradually weakened him, the dog Undaunted he continued to travel to the station to revise its master. In April 1934, was realized, by the sculptor Teru Ando, a bronze statue in his likeness that was placed in the station of Shibuya (another kind was erected in Odate, his birthplace), the same dog was present at the opening.

Hachiko exhibited in the Museum of ShibuyaL'8 March 1935 to filariasi Hachiko died at the age of 12 years, after waiting, uninterrupted, for over 10 years, the return of his master. His death was merciless, the Japanese community, the news was included in all the front pages of Japanese newspapers and was declared a day of mourning to remember the repeated gesture of loyalty to its owner.

With the coming of the Second World War, the Japanese government, requiring large quantities of metal to build weapons, ordered to use also the statue of Hachiko. In 1948, three years after the end of the conflict, Ando Takeshi, son of Teru, received the commission to sculpt a new statue of the dog, in the same place of the previous year.

Despite the body of Hachiko was preserved through taxidermy and exhibited at the National Museum of Nature and Science in the northwest of the station, some of his bones are buried in the cemetery in Aoyama, beside the grave of Professor Ueno. On 8 April of each year in Japan will be organized a ceremony to remember Hachiko, as part of various dog lovers who bring their tribute to his loyalty and his devotion.

Does anyone else feel weird about the fact that after Hachiko's death they stuffed his body? I find it disrespectful to a great dog even if it is to preserve him. Like we don't stuff our dead human heroes after they die as they left enough of a reputation to be remember for all time but why can't that same respect extend to a dog. Taxiderming in my opinion is just plain creepy especailly for Hachiko, he had lots of pictures take of him from that time no need to stuff his body and put it into a museum.

The statue is good but why stuff him to be seen by everyone after he died? I find that himulating and just wrong, anyone else feel that way?

yeah Balto. The famous sled-dog that brought medicine to the children of Nome back in 1925?
They stuffed his body too and stored him away in a dusty room when his time in the spotlight faded.

yeah it's kinda weird.
I think he is on display in a museum somewhere though but for a time he was treated very poorly while he was still alive. It's sad that some people can be so cruel.
Luckily he was rescued by a dude and lived a better life after that until he died and was stuffed and put on display.
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that we was stored in the basement of a museum for several years, but I don't remember where I read it.

in fact, we preserve objects of important people in history, there are even people who have been embalmed, Abraham Lincoln was embalmed after his assassination in 1865. In order to Prevent anyone stealing Lincoln's body, Lincoln's eldest son Robert called for Lincoln's exhumation in 1901 to be buried in a concrete vault in the burial room of his tomb in Springfield, Illinois. I'm not saying that it's a good thing ...but even Balto was preserved ... the reason why humans can not be preserved is because to make a taxidermy is needed a concrete form (that animals have) ... although I totally disagree with hunting for fun and taxidermy in such cases.

Lightsthroughshadow In reply to AoiAiron [2013-10-14 23:53:11 +0000 UTC]

So you're saying its easy to preserve animals as they are less complex life forms to preserve while humans are harder?

We do it to animals in hopes of getting enough practice to do it to ourselves that it may lead to future taxiderming things like cryogenics?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

AoiAiron In reply to Lightsthroughshadow [2013-10-15 00:14:02 +0000 UTC]

no xD that's too excesive... what I mean by complex is that to practice taxidermy, one should be very familiar with anatomy, sculpture and tanning... and animals anatomy is more easy than human and also sculpting is more easy, they are supposed to make the animal look as similar as it was in life (they use mannequins to maintain shape and put their skin on that) ... in humans this can not be done because humans have many features (not trying to say that animals do not) because of that many taxidermist do not preserve other pet owners for the same reason ... normally they do it to preserve species and museums that have no "sentimental past", I disagree with this but the fact is that in my opinion if humans could they would have done it and even some people would have wished that for themselves ... I know I can sound a little cruel but I don't want to do that  I actually speak spanish so speak of these kinds of things is hard for me

i love the story of Chuken-Hachiko. i own the book and the movie. my dream is to go to japan; i want to depart my flight at tokyo international airport, then take a train to Shibuya station and visit the statue.
i have ni biki akita-ken (2 Akitas). Kuma (bear) and Raiku (lightning). Kuma is sort fo the stereotypical Akita; loyal and devoted to her owners safty. she is calm and cool when no one she doesnt know isnt around. he twin sister -Raiku-, on the other hand, is not. she loves people and is hyper most of the time. Kuma got the name that means bear because she is like a big teddy bear. Raiku got the name that means lightning, because she is hyper and has a white spot in her markings that make it liik like she has a lightning bolt on her fur.
