Also known as Candlemas, Imbolc originated as a Gaelic festival that celebrated the beginning of Spring. The world "imbolc" means "in milk" and during ancient times, lactating ewes represented one of the first signs of spring. Imbolc is also referred to as "Brigid's Day" in honor of the Celtic Goddess of Fertility. All celebrations are focused on rebirth and the banishing of the Winter season. For many it represents the change to come, both personal and within the world.
