Description
When: October 5, 2019
Where: Klein Costa Rica Someren, The Netherlands
These Turacos are, at this zoo, a definite public favorite. They are very attuned to visitors, and personally, we do not (and don't encourage) seeking physical contact with animals, it's obvious these Turacos are used to it.
Luckily, they also enjoyed posing for the camera from a bit more distance
Best part is that they live in the Butterfly zone - those Butterflies in the background are real!
Species: Violet Turaco or Violaceous Plantain-Eater (Violette toerako)
Latin name: Musophaga Violacea
Originates from West Africa.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…They are unmistakable birds, often shy and inconscipious in their treetop habitat.
…Their plumage is a glossy violet, hence the name, except for the yellow forehead, chestnut-red crown, white ear coverts and the orange-red bill. When it flies, the inside of the wings is red, just like in most Turacos.
…Though locally common and not considered endangered, they do suffer from the illegal pet trade.
