RIP Hunter S Thompson, Feb 2005.This was done as the first part of my current Illustration assignment- two portraits of well-known people, one in color, one in black and white. This is, obviously, the color one. I think I'm doing Edgar Allen Poe for the black and white one.
This one went through a lot of process, and I think it's my first really successful picture involving a human. Process included watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas at least 12 times, reading the book once, buying and looking through a copy of Ralph Steadman's "Gonzo; the Art", also numerous sketches, and a very extensive digital color study. Over all, though, I think the result is more than worth the effort. ^^

You not only captured his likeness but his essence. Which I think is something that is so often lacking in artwork of people.
His pose, expression and the background all say without a doubt this is Hunter S Thompson.

Try to watch Where The Buffalo Roam too. It's another Hunter S. Thompson movie that was made in the late 70's (Bill Murray played him) and is equally awesome and hilarious.

You know it!! You are on top of it! Ya, it was right after one of Dylan's shows that he gave him the harmonica. Before the show, too, Thompson asked Dylan to play "Tambourine Man"

Fear and loathing... Amazing. Read the book, haven't seen the movie, but I've heard Mr. Depp actually stayed with Hunter for a few months just to study the part.... Anyway, really, really great piece. Definately captures his spirit, and I love the flag in his shadow.

I can't tell you how incredibly awesome this is. HST is a hero of mine (for reasons I can't really understand; I'm totally against substance abuse), so I love pretty much everything about him. The characterization just rocks.
