In art school once I was tasked with the assignment of drawing an 'idea.' Not any specific idea, but the concept itself. Popculturally we often represent this with a lightbulb, springing to inspired illumination, but this is such a recent technology that I felt the want of something more ancient, more applicable to people from any place or time. When the idea of an apple occurred to me as a symbol not only of idea, but of thought itself, I fell in love with it, and it's echoed through my work ever since. As a fierce free-thinker myself, I love that it ties in the sensual element of deliciousness, but also of defiance, courage, empowerment, and even sin. For the one who ate the apple was a woman, opting out of a state of eternal, imposed infancy by reaching into the bows of the Tree of Knowledge. Years later I heard a line from the brilliant Borgia: Faith and Fear which embodied my feelings sublimely... "In the Garden of Eden, Eve showed more courage than Adam. When the serpent offered the forbidden fruit, she knew that there was something better than paradise."
People often ask me what this one means, or offer up interpretations radically different than my own -- which I love. Besides what I've laid out above, I invite, encourage you to interpret this one any way you like
