If there's one thing that Mako prides himself on, it's his ability to read people. It's a talent that he picked up rather early in life, however it has been strengthened significantly ever since he began work as a bartender. While Mako doesn't consider himself as a particularly warm person, he supposes that he comes off as friendly enough while on the clock. Mako by nature is somewhat reserved, rarley falling victim to public emotional outbursts, making him a good rock for people to come to when they are struggling. When he is angry or sad, he tends to deal with his problems by himself- not wanting to worry anyone. While Mako did attend a rather notable college, he isn't too motivated to get a job with the degree he holds, preferring to spend his days surfing. When Mako isn't on the clock, he tends to come off a little aloof and hard to get close to. Honestly, he sort of prefers it this way, keeping most of his acquantences at an arms distance. Mako is a person who is often within his own head, thinking things through to a fault. He will never be the one to make risky decisions, even if it could benefit himself in the long run.
Background: Mako had a fairly normal childhood; hailing from a small, preppy town in Massachusetts. He is the youngest out of four children, his three older siblings all being girls. Mako was always rather quiet as a child, passively playing along with whatever his elder sisters wanted. This passive attitude stayed with him throughout his school year however due to a massive growth spurt in fourth grade (which set him up for always growing faster than the rest of the boys in his class) he was never really picked on because of it. Mako was friendly enough with most of the people in his class to be considered 'popular' however there clearly was a distance between him and the core of that group- making him somewhat of an outsider.
Mako took up swimming during seventh grade and continued with it throughout his highschool years. He liked it, however, after a few years of Swim Team- it became just another item to add on to his high school transcript. Mako floated through high school somewhat passionless, earning top grades and having a girlfriend just because it was something he thought he was supposed to do. Mako's years of drifiting came to a halt when in his junior year of high school, he picked up surfing during a family vacation to Hawaii. It was like color had come into Mako's dull gray world. Finally he had something to be interested in- something that he could actually see himself doing with joy rather than out of a sense of necesity.
With a new look on life, Mako headed to college out in Hawaii to surf (and get his majors in archeology and art history). He was bright but didn't really have any plans past school other than surf so he picked himself up and moved to New Atlantis. Mako began bartending as a way to pay rent. This was supposed to be a temporary job however it slowly turned into his long term profession as he just didn't possess the motivation to search for anything else (which has upset his parents). Mako now lives life one wave to the next, not waiting for anything in particular.
