Description Concept of Katana - KIBA

This model I did in time when I made series of Katanas in the past. Now I just finish it by adding scabbard which is not long work. Quick renderings, outputs compiled in photoshop and tehre is result up there.

Program: 3ds max

Engine: Vray

Model: Highpoly

Do you like it or not? Tnx for comments if any.

Bye

Nice.
However, a 'few remarks': being a more traditional man (read: very) I notice that the blade misses the cutting edge hardening line.
Also, the saya seems too plastic.
Lastly, the katana showed seems to have a more 'western' style decoration.
Maybe try to add an eastern dragon style or flower style instead.
The tsuba seems somewhat plastic, but otherwise fine.

I hope you do not mind me saying, but your other works far exceed this blade.

NOTE:
This is a PERSONAL opinion.
Some might agree, most, I THINK will disagree.
But, as the romans said: "De gustibus non est disputandum."
One cannot discuss taste.
And my writing is about just this: TASTE.

I cannot wait to see more goodies, sir.
If I may make a suggestion: I am a lover of miniguns.
Far less easy, I reckon (might be wrong, you have a good eye and understanding of weapons).

I bid all a formidable Christmass, and a splendid New Year.

I do agree with Xograrorth (missing cutting edge). Β However from the design of the hilt and scabbard, Its obviously not a traditional Katana. Β Keep the black (i'm sure wanted it that color), but add some other darker textures to it to make it stand out. Β Other than that...I think you did a hell of job on this piece.Β Β

hi. tnx for comment. Anyway This is critique so dont need to apologise for making critique. I always take it in good way. That plastic look of blade - you are not first one pointing this out. It is hard to me to make it right. If you make movie then reflection in several frames give you proper feeling about steel surface but when yo do only 1 frame (picture) then it is not easy to hit the spot. If the light is too weak or too inderectional then steel is dark or in opposite point it is too shiny. Need to tweak it somehow..

Well, thing is, it IS about basic taste.
And my taste can be off.
Hence the apologies.

Your work is in general DARNED professional, spot on, near insanely detailed.
You DO know your stuff, and that I like to point out.

As for the saya:
Maybe try a shiny wood decoration?
That will take the plastic look away, I THINK.
Note, think.
The saya is sometimes made of wood.
Maybe a red wood type?

Just thinking out loud, my friend.Β Β

no wrong but it is not complicating and I did it in one sessions. Just quick job on simple desing. There are desings in my work which I value more...

Well I just thought of something after looking at a couple more of your swords: if you could find a way to get your designs carved out of metal you could sell them as amazing works of art to weapons enthusiasts and more. If it interests you, I would suggest looking at companies that rent out metalworking furnaces or laser cutters. Personally, I would love to own your Clovis.

animaaniki [2014-03-15 07:03:13 +0000 UTC]

the sword is not wideΒ enough, or rather, the handguard is too big... typical japanese swords have handguard about twice the width of the sword, from side view.Β yours happened to be 3x or more and it dwarfed the blade width.

peterku In reply to animaaniki [2014-03-17 08:26:33 +0000 UTC]

hi. I have problem to hit right dimensions and proportions on swords continually all the time. In general I think I'm doing grip too fat which really makes blades look dwarfed. Lenght should be ok as I copied them from real swords but most of them still looks like for small people.... Β bye.

thats so cool, if you dont mind me asking how did you make the detail on sheath was that sculpted in zbrush. also what reflections, specular and refractions settings do u use in vray to create these effects? thanks

peterku In reply to BethsFienneArt [2013-12-20 11:11:56 +0000 UTC]

It can be sculpted in Zbrush but for this case is enouht (and quicker) to make displace map in photoshop and just grap it on model in 3ds amx. But this function has Zbrush too. You can grap on model displace map and continue in scuplting. bye.

The scabbard is a beautiful piece and the detailing on the blade is fantastic. A minor quibble would be that for such a futuristic look there ought not to be what appears to be a mould line on the tsuba unless it is in fact a two piece item. If it were a two piece tsuba one would have to ask why since it is inherantly weaker than a single piece Tsuba. The only other 'anomaly' is the grip which appears to beΒ  a regular octagon in cross section rather than an 'ovoid' octagon which would function better.

These are only minor quibbles however on what appears to be a very beautiful weapon that evokes a clean futuristic feel.
