Here's my entry for stitchingpirates 's contest: ANY ONE COLOR CONTEST
FIRST PLACE
I grabbed some 14 count blue Aida out of the fabric bin, this particular pick is from a batch that Mattsma sent me to teach my cousin some years ago how to cross-stitch (she ended up teaching herself, much heartbreak). Then I had some blue Caron Watercolors left over from when I did Mirabilia's Dressmaker's daughter, and since I wanted to get this done as quickly as possible and I remembered that the Watercolors thread works best half-stitched so BAM, that was the main choice. It goes from a navy blue to a sky blue. These patterns (both sides of the biscornu come from the book Biscornus et Pique-Aiguilles and you can find it on Amazon ) use quite a bit of backstitching for detail and I knew the Watercolors thread wasn't going to work for that, like, at all, so I grabbed the navy blue Kreinik blending filament that I got from my teacher JoAnn some time ago, when she cleared out her own stash. Last, but not least, I grabbed some regular DMC 890 cotton thread to do the finishing stitches and attach the two sides together with some size 11 permanent opal finish sapphire silver lined glass seed beads. The two buttons holding the center down are from my great-grandma's button stash.
Caron Watercolor thread didn't give me as much trouble as it did the first time and for that I am thankful. The first time I used it back with the dressmaker's daughter I was super confused about how much I was supposed to separate the strands, but this time it was a piece of cake. Kreinik is a lovely thing to work with but naturally being a metallic thread it comes with the metallic thread struggles. I had to deal with several break points, restarting, securing old lines, and so on. It's worth it in the end but mannnn, metallics. DMC is DMC, no complaints there. I did have to switch to a beading needle to get the beads on but that's fine, they're the same type as my most favorite beads (as seen in my icon), just blue instead of pink. While I was securing the buttons the thread broke which ticked me off but a couple extra secures later and they're attached now.
As for WHY I chose to do a blue monochrome, it's doubling as a surprise gift for someone. I have to get it out in the mail by March and it just so happened that the contest came out at the same time I was already planning to do an all blue biscornu. What lucky timing, I say! The contest was just the motivation I needed to get it done.

I don't! Doesn't it ruin the shine if you do that? It's the same reason why I wouldn't use the wax thread conditioner - too much chance the shine would poof out.
