Description The Necronomicon or Book of Dead Names. This is one of my most recent deviations. I just finished this book prop today.
The cover was sculpted in clay and cast in latex rubber. I basically built this book from scratch and added nearly 200 blank parchment pages that can be filled with any mundane or arcane subject by the customer. A very challenging project that turned out very, very cool!!

The Necronomicon? You can't be shown one!

While the libraries never will loan one!

But if it's so rare

And guarded with care

Why does every nut case seem to own one?

Truly this is an amazing work. Your time was well spent. Now we just need a crazy arab from about a thousand years ago to pen it (at least that is who Lovecraft credits to its existence). Now I'm a bit more mundane, and would use it for other purposes, but it sure would make an excellent conversation piece of a personal library.

The Evil Dead movies rock.

Thanks again for the compliment!

I had originally sculpted the book cover for a Haunted House way back in '94. Then when it came time to tear the house down for the year, I could not bear to toss it. Since then, I had sculpted several other versions. Two classic Army of Darkness versions and two more unique variations of the Evil Dead 1 book cover and a custom design of my own. Fun stuff to re-create!

The original sculptor, Tom Sullivan, deserves some kudos as well for coming up with the classic Necronomicon ex Mortis.(Book of the Dead of the Dead) Too bad he didn't think my work compared to his. LOL

Well he hasnt written any books. He's done about 60 or so short stories ands about 3 mini-novels of about 100 pages or so. Two of the mini-noves I would recommend, "At The Mountains of Maddness." and "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward."

In various of his short stories he does refrences passages and lines of the book. An interesting note for you, apparently the name "necronomicon" came to him a dream. If you'd like a full 'history' of the book I'd suggest looking on wikipedia. It has had wuite a colorful life.

The mythology of this fictional book seems to have grown over the decades.
With the Evil Dead movies, it just added more to the "history" of this infamous tome.

I saw this book at the library... at first, I looked at the cover, and I thought "hmm... maybe it's not THAT bad", but then it spoke to me, saying "I'll swallow your soul!"... normally, I don't judge a book by the cover, but for some reason, I felt compelled to put it back on the shelf.

The publisher's factory(Hellmouth Press, I think) mysteriously burnt down and was swallowed by the earth before any more copies could be made. If only the typesetter hadn't read the words as he was setting up the run!! LOL

Great work!

I always wanted to make a Necronomicon ex mortis out of leather (cow), but I need to figure out a negative mold for the face on the cover.

Thanks for giving me an idea.

Thanks for the "oooooo"!

I've enjoyed playing with different versions of it as well.

One of my custom covers is up on Ebay right now under the seller name mrflibbles. I also sculpted a "Rabid" version of the Army of Darkeness cover(The one that attacks Ash in the graveyard) and a modified Evil Dead 2 cover. They seem to sell pretty darned well.

I'm planning on doing a couple more styles as time allows.

I think a lot of us are feeling the pinch in our pocketbooks these days.

The bright side is that I am awyas willing to trade art and costume items with other people. Maybe we can do a trade some time.
