Description This is one of the most conflicting pieces I've drawn in a long time. There are equally as many things I'm happy and unhappy with. For instance, I like the way the foliage in the tree turned out, but I'm not so much a fan of the tree stump. I tried doing that spotted shading you get when light filter through leaves, but I'm not sure if I managed to convey it. The grass looks messy but I also feel like I'm getting closer to the actual style I wanna use. I'm also conflicted with the shading on Link. On the other hand tho, I'm happy with the background and the effects around the castle. The sky is also the right shade of blue.
I might redraw this in the future, I've tried a bunch of new things here (and it shows), but I'll manage it. I've also used acrylics for the sky and most of the greenery, and I feel like I'm finding a balance there as well. We'll see~

I think the stippling you used throughout the piece looks consistent. Filtering light through the leaves, the fact that the tree's shadow on the grass isn't a solid one to convey the gaps between the foliage, and the perspective of Link, where he is, and how far Hyrule castle is. The crisp blue sky is lovely, too.

Maybe as far as the Calamity particles go, there could be a little more saturation to convey Ganon's presence and power there, and in turn pop out from all the natural colors you used in the rest of the background. Red and green are complimentary, so it makes the painting look interesting and not all one kind of color! This does also look like watercolor, and sometimes red can come out looking a bit washed out (from personal experience ;-; )

Overall I really love it as well as the rest of your gallery. <3

aww man i appreciate the feedback, but by now i see so much wrong in this picture that i'm almost considering deleting it D:

there were certain things i tried here but that i went on about in the wrong way. the shading on the tree stump is really messy and i have completely changed the way i do foliage and grass, as well as the background landscape being kind of messy. i'm happy with how link turned out, but the blotchy shading ruined him (especially the hylian hood pattern, which looked really nice before i painted over it)

the particles were actually a lot more red, but i covered them with white acrylics because they stood out way too much at some point, but the castle is actually the only thing i'm still happy with in this picture. the sanctum tower should have been higher (and baybe have a darker shade of blue overall), but i'll keep that in mind with the malice particles if i ever get around to redoing this~ thank you very much tho!

Absolutely! I've felt that way about uploads, but I think its ok to keep it up to have a stamp of a time where you made a thing, whether you loved it or not. Helps show growth, ya know?

I really love your work. C:

Peaceful.

That is what I feel when I look at the tree leaves and the sky in this. I can almost hear the leaves rustle gently in the wind, birds chirping in the tree, and feel warmth of the sun. Those things you definitely nailed it this.

I agree with you, that tree stump really needs some more work. The coloring itself is fine, but you probably drew it too straight and where are all the branches? It's been 100 years since the kindom of Hyrule was destroyed, and I don't think there are any gardeners taking care of those trees :'D Same thing for the grass, I know you're probably happy with the colors and all, but it looks kinda rushed to me. With some time and care you can make fine grass with the colors you used (even tho I'm not a big fan of those colors), but as of now it looks like a mess.
Link is just fine but nothing spectacular. He's little too sketchy-looking without any good detail.

If you're doing a redraw of this, please take the good things from this and improve everything else. The idea is nice and all, but in some parts of the execution needs more work.

pfff, of course there's gardeners in hyrule, what are you talking about i didn't even realize that it looks like it's out of a picture book, goddammit

the sad thing is, the grass is the thing i spent the most time on. i just kept adding on it because i constantly thought there was something missing (which clearly didn't work because it looks rushed af). BUT it's helped me figure out what i've been doing wrong, and i hope to implement what i've learned for next time i draw grass.
there was more detail on link at first, but it got a bit eaten up by the shading. i wish i'd taken off the hoodie tho so that you could see his hair.

i'm glad it's got some atmosphere though, the leaves are probably the part i'm happiest with

What if Link just cut off all the branches? Dunno why though, in a desperate need to get some super bad weapons (because no, he just can't use the Master Sword to do all the job with the enemies) or then he needed some quick torches... X'D

even bombs are more useful than tree branches or, may hylia have mercy, korok leaves Β

lol. What, you need a Korok leaf to sail the raft. And ain't that the first item that possibly ever saved you from a Bokoblin? My friend doesn't respect the leaves at all, she always whacks the ball or whatever in stasis with one because she lacks sledgehammers. XD

Well, when and if you're doing a redraw of this, I'm interested to see the improvement from this one ; )

Making grass can be surprisingly tricky tho, and there's no one right way to do it. Just keep trying until you figure out what's the best way for you

I just imagined the guardians around Hyrule castle taking care of the trees, that seems plausible enough

That shadow of the tree looks incredible, not being just a dark mass which covers everything but letting the grass show as well. I also like the little flowers you sprinkled across the field and the foliage and sky look just right. And the swirls around the castle create great motion which goes along with Link's flowing cloak and light brush strokes in the sky. I know he looks like standing on the edge of the shadow but perhaps his shading should be darker in some places? But my, this is beautiful and calming! You've used the 'empty' space well to create distance, just like in the game, it's clear by a glance the world is bigger around him than that what we see and this is especially what I find stunning in this piece! The trunk looks okay to me though maybe a bit too similar to the cloak by the style, again I think making the cloak darker could help, but just my opinion. Anyway, it's gorgeous, it's peaceful and a well-done piece! Such peaceful landscape almosts asks for a Guardian to peek behind the corner... >____>Β

thank you! i'm glad you like the atmopshere i was trying to convey
i'm not sure if I could have made him look any darker without essentially rendering him a silhouette, but i'm not too happy with the shading on him overall. i was trying to do the spot-like shadow that's seen under a tree, but it needs some work, which is probably why it seems too light in some places. same for the tree trunk :vΒ
it's funny how you mention guardians, since i was close to central tower (the one literally surrounded by guardians) while i was taking screenshots to reference this pic, and i got attacked by the same guardian twice while doing so. the first time, i killed him, then blood moon happened exactly 5 minutes later, and i had to kill him again.

You're very welcome! Yes, those realistic shadow plotches are hard, especially with him being so small... it could easily make him quite dark and probably even a bit messy.

Because in BotW the peacefulness is never really just that... Haha, that's quite something and just for screenshots! Ugh, that tower, I should go get it sometime, it's just... annoying. I once went to the field with my fast horse and pwned the Guardians one by one until I ran out of Ancient arrows (And to do that I used the search function for Guardians to warn me, it worked out rather well! XDD). And yes, the field became quite a peaceful place and easier to explore. It was too bad the Blood Moon came to end all the fun. But yes, that field is just best to explore with a horse, by the way have you seen this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWIein… ?

PitchBlackEspresso In reply to TheStarlightPrincess [2017-09-12 12:38:04 +0000 UTC]

you haven't gotten to that tower yet? it's really not that bad, there's a couple of guardian stalkers roaming around it, but they don't bother you while climbing the tower itself. the more annoying ones are the 2 legless ones, but if you have the master sword they're really easy to kill. once they're out of the way, it's one of the easiest towers. i don't even bother trying to kill guardians anymore, they always come back to life...
pfff get on mah level, i killed a guardian stalker with only bombs once (they do exactly 2hp of damage each. it took FOREVER)

I know, I'm just plain lazy to even think about that. XD I've two towers left, that and the Hebra one. Though I've kind of promised myself not to play until this autumn's matriculation examination is over, so I've been like, hmm, impossibly about at least a month not even touching the game. Without DA and the game case on my shelf I'd probably already temporarlily forgotten the whole thing is just few button presses and clicks away from me. True that, but I need ancient arrows, I HOARD them, just because I like them... and well, that armour thing would be nice to get also. ^^

i still play the game regularly mainly because it's the only truly immersive game i have (i don't really own many games anyway, and most of them are pokemon or zelda titles), i'm still not bored by it but soon i'll be starting university again, so i won't have much time for anything else anymore either... *sob*

Yeah, it's just about two weeks and I can start playing again. I don't own many titles either apart from Zelda or PokΓ©mon which are my main interest. Actually I had to stop Sun and Moon (I was somewhere in the middle) because BotW came. And I haven't beaten the PokΓ©mon nor the Zelda ones (also speaking of those several old Zeldas I'll have to sometime adventure). Gaming all the way! Ah, too bad, I know how it feels, but you'll survive, right? XD

i have more "old" zeldas than new ones (mostly because the switch is my only home console), and i. hate. zelda 2. with. a. passion (actually i don't, but if you've ever played that game, the frustration is through the roof). i finished moon soon after it first came out, and i've started a new playthrough some time ago, i should probably get back to it... i've actually restarted most of my games, but somehow i haven't gotten around to continuing my playthroughs...
i just want it to start already so it's behind me

Same. I have the Oracle series, ALttP, Link's Awakening and The Legend of Zelda. Don't own Zelda two though I've thought of buying it sometime. But I've seen the gameplay that platform jumping isn't really my thing, some dungeons look difficult especially the bosses. The first zelda is hard enough to me I die before I even reach the dungeon where I'm going. Or if I manage it there I die at the first room or so... I'm stuck in the both Oracle games in the 4th dungeon in OoA, should find a key, and in OoS also at the 4th dungeon (I hate number 4) should get past some platform jumping in a dungeon where the platforms disappear and reappear. In Link's Awakening I just can't find a key either and in ALttP I recall it's the dungeon missing and the first Zelda's just too difficult... BotW is the only new Zelda I haven't beaten yet, if TP HD doesn't count. And yes, I suck at finishing the new playthroughs also. There's like I SS which I've began so many times, TWW the hard mode, SP, PH... Mostly it's because of super annoying part or then I should prepare for the very final boss and I just have no energy to go search those heart pieces and potions. X'D I began to play Sun as I got it as a present, but then I bought Moon and liked it more so, Sun is somewhere just past the beginning when in Moon I should become the Champion... but I just WT PokΓ©mons and fill my Dex in the hope to one day get my PokΓ©mon trained enough and also get the Shiny Charm.
Oh? That's good, I guess. XD

you own a lot of zelda games, i'm jealous ;w; i only got zelda 2, link's awakening, ocarina, majora's mask, oracle of ages, a link to the past, a link between world and botw. i'm missing all the console titles D: but yeah, the dungeons in zelda 2 are a pain, but the overworld is much worse, you run into enemies all the time and they almost always kill you immediately, and you restart from the beginning of the map (which is HUGE) every time you game over. it's a torture. LA is one of my favourite titles, i've finished it once and started it again, but somehow i can't trigger an event to go to the fourth dungeon (there we go with 4 again haha). i've also restarted oot on master mode, but i don't think i'll continue it, it's too hard i'm hoping ss will get a switch port, i love that game and i really wanna play it (i've only watched walkthroughs). i've also got minish cap and spirit tracks on my wishlist (ww and tp as well of course, but i can't really afford a wii u...)
wondertrading pokemon is hilarious when you get pokemon with funny nicknames (i once sent out a trubbish called trashbaby, i hope someone appreciated it)

Yeah, all except for Zelda 2, and Four Swords games (which aren't available anywhere! D': ). And then I have some games with both versions, like MM both 3DS and virtual console and TP both Wii U and Wii. Sounds pretty much like the first zelda, in my part at least. OoT master mode was fun, cows in the belly of Lord Jabu Jabu etc. I can imagine the pain. I have a Wii, but I never use it (only have it because I once bought MM virtual console version for it), because well, the resolution is better in the Wii U even if you play Wii games. ^^ It's such a huge downside to Switch you can't afford Wii U games to it. There's so much more to play when you have a Wii U acess, that's just too bad. I've used eshop a lot for those old Zeldas. For Wii U you can also pretty much buy anything but Switch seems a lot more limited. What Zeldas you can even have for that? Only the old virtual games, and BotW of course? SS was my favourite before BotW. So much fun flying that loftwing and the motion conrols! <3 (I know some hate them, but I find it great to get to swing something wile striking with a sword ^^)TP is also great, especially the HD one (I should still beat Cave of Shadows once more for more hearts to Wolfie)... I loved TWW too and especially The Minish Cap! Its only downside is that it may be a bit short, but definitely worth every hour! One of the prettiest pixel games I know.

Indeed, though many of my nicknames are in Finnish, I wonder if people will ever get them... XD lol I once sent out a Torkoal named Volcanowalks or something like that, sometimes I like the name too much I end up keeping the PokΓ©mon. xD The most though I prefer Japanese named PokΓ©mon. And there's always just a little teeny teeny change for AusLove Shinies etc. Got a Shiny gallade for my Moon, hoorray! Β
