Well yeah it is also the quantity, the more the eat the more likely you are consuming more calories than you need and thus gain weight.
But the thing is, most sugar loaded foods do not fill you up. So you quickly start eating again, hence the often used name for sugar is "empty calories".Β 
You consume calories, but you still feel empty.Β 

Slow carbs (whole grain foods), protein and fats keep you satiated for much longer than sugar (glucose, fructose etc.) can.Β
